Gestational diabetes suspected at 21 week scan - how soon for GTT

I had my 21 week scan today and the baby's tummy was really big (basically 100 centile) whereas the rest of the baby wasn't looking so enormous.

So the sonographer recommended a glucose tolerance test. I'm having one at 28 weeks anyway and she said that would be fine. I don't want to wait 7 weeks though. I'm really anxious about it and if I do have GD I want to start managing it now.

Did anyone else have GD picked up at the scan, and if so, how long did you wait to have your GTT?

My BMI is 30, I'm quite old, I have a history of PCOS (treated successfully with metformin) and I have family history of diabetes plus my previous pregnancy was twins who were very big for twins - so I'm massively high risk for GD anyway.

Hi, I was going to say mine was at 28 weeks, but then read your post. I didn't have GD in the end, but was told to go on the GI diet. There is a thread with useful dietary information in this section, but I'm afraid i don't know how to link to it!

Thank you - I think I'm going to ask the midwife if I can have it earlier, but try to do the GI diet in the meantime. I had to do it for my PCOS (as well as taking medication) so I remember a bit, but will search for that thread as well!

Ask to see a consultant about finger prick testing now so they get a better monitoring of you instead of the GTT. Thats what they did with me this time at 22 weeks.

Thank you harrygracejessica - did they not give you the GTT at all this time?

nope, I had it last time at 28 weeks but this time they made me monitor from 22 weeks and I have full blown diabetes this time and injecting insulin as well as taking metformin tablets - seem to keep it under control now.

The consultant would rather she had monitoring over 4 weeks than 1 GTT as gives a better idea if you do have it or not.

Really sorry to hear that but glad it is under control. Thanks for your help.
