So was your baby's estimated fetal weight accurate?

Did you have a 3rd trimester scan for fetal size and/or growth? The sonographer must have given you an estimated fetal weight. How accurate were they?

Please, I really need to know.

Been told bubs is average weight/size while here I am, at 39+1, with a ginormous belly, much larger than with DD and lots of extreme symptoms compared to 1st pregnancy. The fluid volume is normal too, so it can't be all water in there Grin

I've read a few posts where the baby turned out much bigger or smaller than EFW, in some cases causing unexpected problems at delivery...

IIRC, DS was supposed to be 7lb and was 9 1/2 lb. HTH

winnybella · 07/03/2011 17:40

yy DD was supposed to be no more than 3.6kg, was 4.35kg.

midori1999 · 07/03/2011 17:48

For four of my DC they were exactly accurate. In the case of my premature twin daughters, to the oz!

Didn't have one for my other DC.

midtowner · 07/03/2011 17:54

ds1 was over a pound heavier than estimated (est 3kg, was 3.75)
ds2 was about two pounds heavier (est 3.5kg, was 4.5)

NorkyButNice · 07/03/2011 17:54

DS1 was estimated around 8lb and was 8lb 13oz.

DS2 was estimated as 10lb and was 11lb 3oz.

ShowOfHands · 07/03/2011 17:59

Are you worried about delivery? Weight isn't usually a problem. Position and head circumference are key indicators. I was huge when pg, really enormous but had an average 7lber who got stupidly stuck due to malpositioning.

SIL was told all of her babies would be 'enormous'. Biggest was 6lbs 12oz.

Milngavie · 07/03/2011 18:00

Ds4 estimated at less than 5lbs but weighed bang on 8lbs.

Ds2 was estimated purely by feel by my mw and she reckoned 9 - 9.5lbs, he weighed 9.2lbs.

doubleshotlatte · 07/03/2011 18:01

Thanks everyone!

There does seem to be quite a variation. It also seems that the bigger the baby the more "off" the estimate Hmm

puffylovett · 07/03/2011 18:02

DS2 was estimated to be 6lbs or so, was 9lb 13oz Hmm

BrigitBigKnickers · 07/03/2011 18:02

DD1 was estimated as 10.5 lbs- was just over 8lbs
DD2 estimate-11lbs- was 8.6lbs.

Very inaccurate

doubleshotlatte · 07/03/2011 18:05

showofhands not worried as much about delivery, thanks for asking :) , more like whether DS will be small like DD was (cue snarky comments and lot of heartache until she caught up and now towers over her peers). MIL has let me know that all boys in their family are ginormous babies Hmm

milngavie wow, that's some skilled MW! better than most ultrasound machines!

catwhiskers10 · 07/03/2011 18:12

DD was estimated 6lb 8oz 5 days before she was born and was 6lb 14oz so it was pretty accurate

physteach · 07/03/2011 18:25

Estimated to be 9lb was 6lb 4.5oz.... got stuck coming out was told if she was bigger the birth would have not ended in vontusse......?!

physteach · 07/03/2011 18:28

Oh and I was so huge people kept saying 'are you SURE it's not twins' which was really bloody annoying helpful.

And when waters broke I needed to wear maternity pads for 24hrs before labour established.

So you really never can tell, doubelshotlatte I hope your birth goes well, all the best! Smile

Ooooh I wasn't told about the size of my placenta but that could have added to my hugeness blooming pg belly Wink

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 07/03/2011 18:37

was told DS1 was worriyingly small thought no more than 5lb full term and he was 6lb 7oz

was told DS2 was going to be "a big one" whatever that means and he was 7lb1oz

if I had another I would likely ignore any comments on size.

Imnotaslimjim · 07/03/2011 18:38

MW gave an estimate of 9lb with just a feel and DS come out at 6lb 13 lol. But like strawberries, the placenta was massive! I was pretty big too, so thought she was right!

My son was estimated at about 6lb, was actually 9lb3. According to the NICE guidelines (regarding diabetes) the weight estimates shouldn't be used as an indicator for section cos their accuracy rate is 1/3 (IIRC, which I may not, my head don't work no more). Can't wait to find out how big this one's going to be, she's coming out at 37+6 and is scanning bang on average. Should I start a pool? I bags 7lb2. ;)

Firawla · 07/03/2011 19:17

one of mine was estimated at about 8lb or just over 8lb but he was actually 9 and half pounds

doubleshotlatte · 07/03/2011 19:31

strawberries :o at your giant placenta - its one thing we never think of in all these size estimations/hugeness conversations...

There, now I'm convinced its my placenta making me a mini-blimp Grin

notthewowy at this rate, I doubt there'll be any takers for a mumsnet betting forum on birth weights, What they thought V. What came out Grin

finding this interesting reading, mw told me ds would be between 7 and 8lb, he was 9lb4, this time i've been (vaguely) monitored as bump measuring small, I was told 3 days ago there is [quote] 'no way' this one will be as big. Am unconvinced and will hopefully, see in ooooh about 3 days Grin

Tillyscoutsmum · 07/03/2011 19:45

They told me DS would be "around" 10lb 6oz at term. He arrived on his due date and weighed 10lb 5oz.

They thought DD would be around 8lb and she was 9lb 12 oz
