Really cold during pregnancy

I had a m/c some 9 months ago at 7wks and as time goes on with no BFP in sight, I have too much time to think about what happened. Anyway, whatI really noticed was that I was exceptionally cold when I was pregnant...as in unaturally so for the Summer months. I was in layers of clothing and huddling up to waterbottles at home. I had my thyroid tested after m/c which came back normal.
Does anyone else get like this and have had a normal pregnancy or is this totally unrelated to anything...??

Im a LOT colder than usual, was putting it down to not being so manic active.

megansmummy1 · 07/03/2011 16:13

i am also a lot colder that usual but just been blaming it on being so tired all the time. Seem to remember being the same with DD 4yrs ago. Dont think it is a sign of problems tho.

Hi Jackie,

First of all, I'm so sorry to hear that you had a miscarriage - really hope you get that BFP soon.

Regarding feeling the cold, I am nearly 16 weeks pregnant and have been feeling the cold an awful lot so far. It's just starting to improve but I have spent alot of these first weeks huddled up in a blanket whenever I am not actually moving.

Otherwise everything seems to be progressing fine (fingers, toes and anything else that can be crossed is crossed while I type this!) so that leads me to assume it is normal for some women to just feel the cold more when pregnant Confused? A good friend has just had a baby and she said she felt the same, which reassured me.

As I am due to give birth at the end of August I have a feeling that I will be looking back on my chilly first trimester fondly, wishing I felt that cool again when I'm sweating my way through the summer with a large bump!

With any luck someone will be along with a more scientific reply in a minute, but hopefully this has helped a bit in the mean time.

I'm really cold all the time, especially my hands and feet, and I was the same when I was pregnant with DS - my toes and fingers actually go blue at times. My midwife at the time said it's due to your organs working harder and the baby needin oxygen from your blood stream so everything is directed at those two things and your extremities get a bit neglected and can feel colder than normal. Not sure if it's medical fact or her trying to be reassuring but loads of people feel cold in pregnancy.

citymonkey · 07/03/2011 16:22

Also cold a lot. Although I am usually a 'cold' person anyway (my hands and feet get very cold unless I have socks / slippers on), I have noticed it a lot more over the last few weeks and have been having a hot water bottle in bed and upstairs while sitting on the sofa watching telly... I am 12+2 with my first pregnancy.

MrsVidic · 07/03/2011 16:45

I am another cold person and I'm 19 weeks gone now! I think it's to do with low blood pressure

BikeRunSki · 07/03/2011 16:56

I was cold with DS 3 years ago. When I told my sister that I was having a September baby she said "Oh you silly cow, you'll be biggest at the hottest time of year". Nothing of the sort, I warmed up to something approaching normal body temperature when I was 7/8/(never got to 9) months gone in July and Aug.

Now 7 weeks with DC 2 and incredibly cold. Had a fit of absolutelty uncontrollable shivers today for about 10 mins despite waering a merino wool long sleeved vest, thick woolen cardigan and down jacket.

chipmonkey · 07/03/2011 17:46

I am 5 weeks now and freezing . I was going to start a thread about it. I really don't remember it being a problem before. I have to have the heating on at home and the air-con off in work.

iWILLdothis · 07/03/2011 17:56

Another freezing person here.... 7 wks now and hugging a hot water bottle under a fleecy blanket, wearing cashmere & lotsa layers with heating on!! It was the same in last pregnancy. Hope you get your BFP soon...and that you'll join us shivering bunch soon, as it seems to be a good sign, at least it's one of the more tolerable symptoms :)

Have you had blood tests recently! Sometimes being a bit anaemic can make you feel the cold more than usual.

Particles · 07/03/2011 18:00

Sorry, not sure what the exclamation mark was about!

Jackie75 · 07/03/2011 18:07

Oh and there was me thinking that that was the problem. I will stop over thinking the situation! That's good to hear there are many freezing people out there. Good luck with your pregnancies!!

Oh the doc tested for anaemia as well but that was fine. I am always cold anyway but i thought being pregnant is suppose to warm you up. I shall just continue to assume I am a reptile!

I could have written this!

I was talking to my DP just an hour ago saying how horribly cold I have been since getting pregnant.

I was almost in pain in bed last night with how cold I was and couldn't slepp - had to get up and put on a hoody, leggings, PJs, gloves and two pairs of socks! Meanwhile, he was just wearing boxers and said he was hot! I've been wondering if there's something wrong with me. I'll just have to wear more layers I suppose.

BackwardsInHighHeels · 07/03/2011 20:22

I'm 10+1 and have had several episodes of being shivery can't get warm for hours cold. It always seems worse when I'm tired.

That said, I also have episodes of being so hot I think I might puke or pass out. Thankfully not too frequently though. Wish I could find a happy medium temperature wise?

Chynah · 07/03/2011 22:10

I was freezing all the time when pregnant - the amount of clothes I used to wear to bed was ridiculous!

lolajane2009 · 07/03/2011 22:11

I seem to be cold all the time except bed when hubby's extreme body tempreture makes it hot and clammy in bed.
