Terrible gas/burping... Any tips?

Hi, sorry this is a minor complaint compared to some, but making me very miserable. I have terrible gas and burp pretty much non-stop. It's also quite painful in my chest if I can't get the air out. Does anyone have any tips for reducing/coping with this? I'm trying Tums tablets but they aren't doing much good so far. Any advice appreciated - thanks!

I found lying on my left side helped me to burp

I found drinking milk or anything with milk in it made my gas worse, try cutting that out and see if it makes a difference. Unbelievable burping was my first preg symptom but its nowhere near as bad now so chances are it will subside for you too.

Hi AJH, me too. Sucks doesn't it?!
Tums are rubbish, get some rennies.
Try lying on one side with your arm tucked just above your hip - it helps to move the wind through you.
If you're eating a lot of greens because you're trying to be healthy, that won't be helping - broccoli especially.
Eat slowly and sitting up properly.
Mine's got better since I hit 15 weeks, if that's any help?

cucumber makes me burp ... maybe lots of that will help! :-)

I had this with dd, I had never burped before! Am pg again and it has ready started Sad

Whatevertheweather · 06/03/2011 21:14

Me too!! It's horrendous. Keep thinking I'm going to be sick but it's just more gas! Eurgh. I do seem to remember this with dd - itgave way to heartburn at about 20weeks! Only thing I find that helps a bit is sucking an extra strong mint

I have this with every pregnancy, for me Gaviscon works wonders, sometimes when I lie down it feels like I have a build up of wind and then I sit up and have to wait a minute for it to find it's way out (blush.....so sick of burping)

nannyl · 06/03/2011 21:46

I too cant stop burping.... am only 13 weeks but its been happening since about week5

sometimes really really loud ones Blush

Thanks all for the replies, it seems there are a lot of us suffering! It got better for me about 14/15 weeks I think but I'm 21 weeks now and it's back worse than ever over the last week or so.
I will definitely try Rennies, and lying on my side (though perhaps not at work!), as well as Gaviscon. Extra strong mints, too. I suspect this will become heartburn before too long - not sure if that will be better or worse...
Oh the joys of pregnancy - it's my first time and at the moment I can't believe anyone does this more than once!

Instead of Rennies Tums and Gaviscon try half a teaspoon of bicarb in a little water (about a shot glass or more) tastes pretty foul but I found it a lot more effective and a lot cheaper.

Ginger is supposed to be good too, ginger tea, ginger beer etc. Not sure it worked so well as gave me an excuse to eat a packet of ginger nuts and not let DH have one.

Hot water is worth a try or a herbal tea. I recently started drinking an 'after dinner' tea which includes fennel, chicory, cardamom, aniseed and licorice root. Its been the only thing that has helped ease the crippling indigestion I recently developed that even gaviscon couldn't help

theonlyhb2 · 07/03/2011 16:23

but dont you feel SO much better for burping? just give into it, I drink a little soda water, burp, feel much better :) it does seem to have got a lot less now. I have had some funny looks when I have been out (they just come out!) but I really don't care now what people think
