As the old thread is nearly full here it is time a brand new thread is born. All we need now is a new vomit face emoticon MN towers!

We are a bunch of past, present and future Confused HG sufferers (along with worried spouses, family and friends) who use this thread to support, listen and discuss the dreaded pregnancy illness that is HG (hyperemesis gravidarum).

There are no limits on how much moaning posters can do nor can anyone's symptoms or experiences be tmi.

The old thread has been a great support to many of us and we hope this new thread carries on the great work started by old thread founder and HG guru LucindaE. She still maintains, supports and clucks Grin around the thread daily even though her own experience of HG is thankfully over.

So with no further incoherent rambling from me on with the new thread eh?

Hi everyone

Waves at mummy Glad you've found us :) And glad you've got some meds. When I went to get my Cyclizine my GP told me that she cannot 100% tell me that they were safe during pregnancy because if there are ever any problems with the baby or ever and mcs it is hard to know if those problems or mcs would have happened naturally and spontaneously anyway. It's a minefield out there. I came home and did some googling and at my booking in appointment asked a consultant and they reassured me that they were safe.

lucinda I think it was me that suggested a routine. I take my first tablet an hour before I get up in the morning which takes away the need for the bile run and then I can successfully have breakfast. If that goes to plan and I take my second tablet 6 hours later and my third 6 hours after that, my day can be pretty normal as long as I don't let myself get too hungry. If I don't get that balance right in the morning, my whole day is stuffed and nothing stays in.

katy Hope you are enjoying your new bundle :) Have a Brew

everyone Hope you are coping ok xx

nitnatnaboo · 20/03/2011 12:34

Congratulations Katy. Brill news! Hope you have managed some lovely sleep since, in amongst eating everything in sight and looking after lovely baby xxx

nitnatnaboo · 20/03/2011 12:48

Welcome Wizz I feel for you, and your bum! I had one injection (didn't work) of Stemetil in the bum in hospital. It bloody hurt - they seemed to waggle the needle around to get it into the muscle. Ouch! I got it after a change of shift brought along some different nurses who didn't approve of the IV cyclizine I was having (and enjoying!). Didn't relaise at the time injecting cyclizine is, according to Dr Wiki, a favourite pastime of people having methadone treatment as it increases the high Grin.

Re routine: I third the idea of taking meds strictly on time and lying still until they've been absorbed. I think Caramel also has a very definite routine?

A nice bile run to start the day today. Opening drawers to get clothes or pyjamas seems to be a bit of a vomiting trigger still....wierd to be psychosomatically afflicted by furniture. Grin

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 20/03/2011 12:50

The injections in the bum are so painful. I had one 5 weeks ago and the area is till tender to touch. That nurse had damaged me for life Grin

MummyAbroad · 20/03/2011 14:02

Thanks for the lovely warm welcome Lucinda and I will definitely post on the site you mentioned. Sorry to hear about your mc. I'm actually in the quite unusual situation in that I know what caused mine (Ashermans Syndrome) so I know it was nothing to do with the HG, but like you say it doesnt stop the anxiety. The irony is that if I wasnt so all consumed by feeling sick all the time, I would probably be worrying even more!

Not sure what to make of my meds - definitely still feel pukey, but it seems to be a lot less (?) - too scared to stop taking them and find out if there really is a difference.

Coconuts and other people with sore bums owch, you have all my sympathy there! xxx

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 20/03/2011 14:33

mummy don't do it! I have felt really good for Friday and Saturday. So yesterday I decided to push my afternoon tablet to see how long I could leave it without feeling sick. It really didn't do me any favours and I spent the afternoon not daring to eat. Take the meds forever Grin

theonlyhb2 · 20/03/2011 17:50

i had to have a routine too, would wake up, have a mouthful of water and then puke as much as required, have a bowl of jelly (or 2, adventurous!) with an anti-sickness then stay in bed til it kicked in (and I knew the jelly would stay down), have ham and dairylea toastie then attempt to get up, shower, go out for an hour, get home, anti-sickness and sleep, wake up, eat, rest, anti-sickness before bed (as late as possible) and repeat!

littlewizz · 20/03/2011 19:35

Thankyou everyone for such a lovely welcome, having trawled through on here I used the routine as suggested took Cyclizine at 6am didnt dare move untill 7am when my bladder was going to burst. Took one at 12 and then one at 6- though concerned about being sick in the night but will have to wait and see. Feeling a little nausea but not been sick all day Smilegot a funny feeling in back of my throat and feel a little spaced out so def not going to try driving for a bit. Anyone else had this does it wear off?? nitnat I had Stemetil with my first preg after a long 10 weeks on new years eve in fact joyand it didnt work at all and was then told there was nothing else they could do so I suffered till 20 weeks. Only just staying out of hospital. Much more violent this time and was borderline hospital yesterday but soo much better today! OH is cooking sausages and mash... the thought of mash makes me heave so sausages only for me - I did manage some pasta for lunch and managed some tuna sweetcorn and mayo spoonfools this afternoon stolen from my DS1's who wanted in his sandwhiches and I did infact fancy it. I am also drinking a lemonade which I normally hate - Confused Hopefully will get through this HG taking drugs - thank god for them and then my next hurdle will be the dreaded SPD which I suffered severely with last time from 20 weeks to birth and then 2 years beyond birth. But this time I am prepared, loud mouthed, and pushy - a gp, mw and consultants worst nightmare!

littlewizz · 20/03/2011 19:46

just realised my spelling and grammer is dreadfull in above post... put it down to screen floating around

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 20/03/2011 20:01

Wizz - feeling spaced out will probably last about a week. The cyclizine made me feel awfully dizzy and light headed and I couldn't move around my home properly without fear of falling or passing out. But after about a week or two the dizziness went completely. You have to really stick at them and sounds like you have a good routine. I'm also mad for lemonade, it's all I can drink. I sent my DH to our mini tesco to get me some and they didn't have any so he came back with 6 cans of 7up, bless him :)

nitnatnaboo · 20/03/2011 22:04

Wizz Yep - first few doses of Cyclizine made me crosseyed but it does wear off

caramellokoalalover · 21/03/2011 08:25

Welcome Mummy and Wizz.

Mummy sorry you're feeling anxious about taking meds and havig to deal with the emotional rollercoaster of your MC. What a lot to deal with. I know I felt like when I MC last year I could have caused it by being scared I'd get HG again after my first HG pg. It's a horrible place to be. Hope you've got lots of support. And I know where you're coming from on the meds front. I've tried to cut down a few times but it always ends in tears. The guilt is a killer. I should look at my healthy 2yo DS, who was made of all sorts of HG meds, and be reassured that I'm not harming the baby but it's so hard not to feel guilty.

Wizz ouch on the bum jabs. Hope the pain is a distraction from the sick feeling for a few seconds at times though Wink. And that the zombie spaced out feelings ease a bit too. Seems to for most I think. Didn't really do anything for me apart from making me feel like I had outer body HG so I tried other meds until I found ondansetron, which is the only one that's worked for me.

Strict routine follower here too. It seems to evolve as the weeks go by but the strict timing remains no magter what it is I'm doing. HG rules my life. Am very much looking forward to being crazy and skipping breakfast or lunch just for the hell of it when this is all over! Or drinking room temperature fluids. What a wild time that will be Grin.

nitnat you need to move your clothes or PJs to see if you can throw the HG off the scent and avoid the trigger!

Everyone else not mentioned...hope you're ok. Especially those who have to go to work today.

littlewizz · 21/03/2011 14:10

well so far today only a couple of trips to stick my head down the loo... the first being the bile run in the morning. Cyclizine does seem to be doing the job though. Still very woozy so not driving and feeling very spaced out but only day two just like you said caramel a bit out of bodied.

I got given 30 tabs, I wonder if doc will make me have to get really sick again before giving me another prescription! Bum feeling less sore today.

Wishing everyone a puke free day. xxx

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 21/03/2011 15:03

Wizz, I was only given 30 to begin with and was calling doc for new prscriptions every 7 days. Got annoyed with this and requested they be put on repeat or a larger quantity given. Last time I got 100 :)

Diege · 21/03/2011 15:12

Hello! I wonder if I could join? I'm on my 4th HG pregnancy (skipped it with dd2)am a week in on cyclizine. I was determined that this time I would seek intervention from when the nausea started (5 wks, later than usual)and touch wood it does seem to be doing something. Having said that, it was only when I started combining with vit B6 that I have found a difference, though that could be coincidence and maybe it would have worked anyway?
I am also frustrated at only getting 30 of them at a time - I presume I have to see the gp again for the next batch? Confused
Good to meet you all over the virtual toilet bowl! I know the bile run all too well Grin

fluffywhitekittens · 21/03/2011 15:15

Waves (and purrs :))
Another one here who had to have bum injections when I was first admitted to hospital as they couldn't get me hooked up to an iv very quickly.
Also found cyclizine made me very spaced out and can't use it.
Mummy I have had two pregnancies with anti emetic meds and both mine are fine and healthy.
Can't get to a computer as often at the moment as mine has finally given up the ghost so will pop by as and when x

fluffywhitekittens · 21/03/2011 15:16

Cross posted Diege, FOUR?! Good Lord you are very brave.
Welcome.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 21/03/2011 15:22

Diege, perhaps they can re-issue the prescription over the phone without an appointment? I tried to get my first lot of pills over the phone and she told me she had to see me in surgery to prescribe them but after that could do it over the phone, once they had been issued the first time. Can't hurt to call in a few days and ask :) Kudos to you for your fourth!

nitnatnaboo · 21/03/2011 15:25

Welcome Diege. 4 HG pregnancies - aagh! You must be made of stern stuff, like Grumblin and Caramel. Glad you have got some meds straight away this time. Have you had the usual " ooh yes I used to eat a biscuit before getting out of bed - why don't you try that, mind you I was never actually sick, I just felt sick " drivel from well meaning people?

Interesting how we get more assertive with each HG pregnancy - I stumbled through the first one unmedicated and with horrendous dehydration headaches but was categorically told there were no safe medications despite revisiting GP's weekly. What liars! Angry

Another puke in the kitchen sink for breakfast today but lunch has stayed put so that's good! Wish it would just buggering well GO AWAY!

Diege · 21/03/2011 15:35

Thanks for the welcome SmileYou know it is such a relief to be amongst people who really know what it's like! I had someone envy me the actual 'being sick' once ('At least you can be sick - I just feel nauseus all day' Angry). I agree that I have become more assertive with each pregnancy (I have 3 dds and a ds)and have tried various things with each, inc. acupuncture which did nothing!!). I was also unable to tolerate stemitil (under lip) and gagged with it in my mouth so this cyclzine does seem a godsend! It is still early days though ( 6 +5) so am hoping that my body doesn't start becoming resistent to it. Is that possible do you think? I have to say that the HG does seem to have got worse with each pregnancy, to the point where the door bell ringing and the feeling of cold air on my cheek would have me throwing up with HG 4. Anyway, I'm trying to keep positive this time which is a lot easier on good days!

Diege · 21/03/2011 15:36

Oh and nitnat I thought it was just me with the kitchen sink Blush Anyone else also get the mouthfuls of saliva that can't be swallowed?

MOH100 · 21/03/2011 16:31

grandmaagain sorry meant to reply to you ages ago about getting evangelical about HG and what can grandmas do. Agree that general support is invaluable, helping round the house and just being a sympathetic non-judgmental ear. If you want to get more active, look at www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/008.asp. This is a report from the first HG conference last year. Right at the end under conference outputs, it says that they are putting together a consensus statement to send to the Royal College of OBs/Gynae on management of HG and they're looking for women who are willing to talk to the media. I suspect this has already been done, given the number of recent TV and radio pieces about HG, but you might want to contact them as you sound like you have had HG in your family for generations.

caramellokoalalover · 21/03/2011 16:40

welcome diege. 4 HG pregnancies. You deserve a trophy and a long holiday. Harrass, harrass, harrass for a larger repeat. The GP at first would only give me a 5 day supply and it took 3 days for them to fill the request for a repeat, hence was a ridiculously short cycle and causing more time wasting for everyone. Finally they agreed to give me a mega supply but not without another appointment first to check off box that I was indeed still sick Hmm. Plenty of other meds out there you can try if you're finding the cyclizine isn't working.

nitnat you must have a sparkling clean sink. Soon I hope you're where I'm at, with baby clothes soaking in Napisan in the kitchen sink ready for a wash and iron brought on by nesting hormones!

LucindaE · 21/03/2011 17:13

Diege Welcome, nice to meet you, you must be one brave women, my goodness. Odd that in one pregnancy you escaped...Smile
NitNat Sorry about sink puking,Sad horrid,I was hoping that the puking had stopped, that is discouraging. How is the mint tea going down/staying down? That winter killed off all the mint in my garden, lucky I'm not suffering now!
Caramel you are, like Grumbling full of resiliance and energy. It's really rude of me to have forgotten, but is this internal troublemaker a boy or girl? How do you do it? Can you see a man doing it? Answers on a postcard... your determined regime andTheOnly Cocoanuts' too sound impressive.
MummyAbroad I hope you feel reassured? I am glad that you and Wizz are a little better.
Waves to 100 and Fluffy hope pc is back working soon...
Wonderful about Katy. You next, Caramel. Is it Grumblin* after that?
Luce LA Lotties Ski Mima how are you? Everyone?Rozeee was flourishing, when she last posted...
Look after yourselves.

some more links and information about meds Been meaning to do this for ages, dd at nursery today so its all systems go. Bit of background - when I was planning pg, I wrote to the Royal College of Obs/Gynae to ask for info on treatment protocols for HG. The library secretary wrote back to say they don't have anything specific (this from an organisation that has guidelines on its website to tell you how many cups of tea you should drink a day while pregnant and how many portions of fish you can eat!!!) but she gave me a link to NICE guidelines on treatment of NVP. Usual stuff, ginger, acupressure, antihistamines, vit B6. NO MENTION OF HG!!! I wrote back, pointed out the lack of info on HG and second line treatments if first line treatments don't work and she sent me links to articles detailing the treatment protocols of the American College of Obs/Gynae (ACOG) and the Society of Obs/Gynae of Canada (SOGC). These are fantastic, particularly the Canadian one.

www.sogc.org/guidelines/public/120E-CPG-October2002.pdf

www.guideline.gov/content.aspx?id=10939

These are the documents I printed and put under the nose of my GP when I went to her to demand meds. She wouldn't look at them but did refer me to an OB, who did give me meds. I don't know if it made any difference, maybe I would have got the referral anyway, but given that she gave me the usual platitudes first - you might not get it (mother and 2 sisters had it), you can use ginger (didn't work for mum and sisters) etc and given that she herself refused point blank to prescribe me anything, I suspect that I would have ended up at A&E needing IV fluids before anything would have happened if I hadn't had anything to back me up and show that I meant business. In any case, for those of you with uncooperative and ignorant GPs, it gives you some back up. It's not some quack remedy you found on the interweb, it's the guidelines of the professional Obs/Gynae associations of two major developed countries, published in peer reviewed academic journals. If they dismiss it, you can ask them on what grounds they are dismissing it and whether they know more about HG than the combined wisdom of the SOGC and ACOG and ask them to tell you exactly which part of these guidelines they disagree with. By this time they'll give you a referral/meds just to get you out of the consulting room. Take an advocate with you, friend/sister/partner/grandma incase you're too weak/nauseous/angry to make sense. Sorry, I can feel the red mist coming down again, HG rant over now, have to breathe deeply.....
