12 wk scan showed 5 week embryo

Went for my 12 week scan today (thinking I was around 11.5 - 12.5 weeks) but the scan showed I was only 5 weeks and the embryo measured only 2.9mm. I have to go back again in 10 days to see if it has grown - however there is no way I can only be 5 weeks as I did at test 5 weeks ago which said I was 3+ wks.
I'm suspecting this is a MMC - wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar?

I'm so sorry Sad I had 2 MMC's before having my dd. My first one, the embryo measured 9 weeks (at 13 weeks by my dates) and I was due to go back after a week but I started to miscarry naturally a couple of days after my scan. The second time, I had a feeling something wasn't right (symptoms disappeared) and I was booked in for an early scan when I should have been 9 weeks. Baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks.

I have a very strong feeling that is what has happened to me - however they won't confirm until 10 days time as they can't detect a heartbeat at 5 weeks they want to wait to see if it grows in order to determine if the pregnancy is viable. I only found out I was pg 5 weeks ago - at which point I would have already miscarried. I've not experienced many pregnancy symptoms and just thought i was one of the lucky one's. However I have experienced some brown spotting which is linked to MMC - yet it is still normal to have brown spotting in a healthy pregnancy.
All I can do now is wait 10 days - unless my body responds naturally in the meantime!:(

I just wanted to say I wiah you all the best x

Tillyscoutsmum · 01/03/2011 21:27

The waiting is the worst. I just wanted to know, grieve, move on and ttc again Sad.

I had brown spotting in my 2nd but not my first but I also had brown spotting in my healthy pregnancies.

mylovelymonster · 01/03/2011 21:31

I went to 12 weeks and then found i had an empty yolk sac - so hadn't progressed beyond 5/6 weeks. It made miscarrying easier, emotionally for me, knowing that the early stages just hadn't worked out as they should. We now have two beautiful girls.

It is a horrible time, and my heart goes out to you x

PrincessScrumpy · 01/03/2011 21:39

Don't completely give up hope, I had cramping and spotting so had a scan - should have been 6 weeks but was told I was no more than 4 weeks (no sense at all - would have been only 2 weeks gone when I got bfp. 10 days later I had another scan which agreed with my dates. Have they done bloods to test hormone levels.

Good luck x

Firstly, I am so sorry you have this uncertainty, the waiting is unbearable, and I hope you get good news after your wait

Last year I had a 12 week scan showing a embryo at 6 weeks and slow heartbeat, and had to go back in 1 week, during which I started to miscarry. During my wait I was told such a difference was not a good sign, but I think the slow heartbeat added to the doubt

Brown I have been told is old blood, and not necessarily a bad sign

Oh, I do hope it works out ok xx

creamcracker · 01/03/2011 22:32

Thank you for your posts.

It helps to hear of others who've had the same experience - and those that have gone on to have healthy babies.
The uncertainty is the worst - at least if I knew for def I could move on - the waiting is the worst.

PrincessScrumpy - no they've not done bloods. I did a home test myself a week ago as I was concerned about my lack of symptoms and brown spotting - but it came up positive immediately with a very dark line. Although if I did MC at 5 weeks - that would have been about 6-7 weeks ago - very Confused!!
I have a photo of my scan in my notes and it shows what I would say is a good size sac with a very small embryo in it.

I know what you mean, I didn't want bad news, but if it was I wanted to know so I could start to grieve and try and move on.

Forgot to say that was my first pg, and I was lucky to get pg straight away, so am currently 13+3 and keeping everything crossed

Blood tests could help, they did them for me this time as I was bleeding a lot, still wasn't 'conclusive' but a good sign. Do you have a scan date? Could they move forward a bit, or if not could you have a private scan? With me they needed a week so they could measure growth. The wait is agonizing, I feel for you

creamcracker · 02/03/2011 09:51

Congratulations on your pg Orange Gloss - it must be an anxious time due to your previous experience, but the fact you are past the 12 wk stage is positive - and you read about all the people that go on to have a successful pg straight after a MC.

I thought about calling my midwife this morning (she's only available 8.30am-9am) to ask about having bloods taken - but I just kind of know the outcome! May see how I feel tomorrow. Can the doctors also do it?

I find it strange that, if I did miscarry 7 weeks ago, everything is still in place inside me - surely my body should have got rid of it - but maybe it can take a while!?!

I really doubt I'm in the early stages of pg as my last period was early Dec.

Thank you for your support x

Hi creamcracker, just wanted to say I'm sorry this is happening to you. I had the same thing - discovered at 12wk scan that the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks (which is when I had a very slight amount of spotting). The GP I spoke to at the time told me that if I was going to miscarry it I would know about in a couple of days - he never said you could have a mmc where your body does not recognise the loss, so I thought I was OK - huge shock. At my 12 weeks scan I was immediately given the option of an ERPC - no waiting around.

I had another MMC after that but went for an early 'reassurance' scan which showed the same thing had happened, although I had to wait 10 days for a follow-up scan, which was the worst part of it, so I do feel for you.

(BTW I'm now 33 weeks pg so it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you etc - unfortunately just one of those things!)

creamcracker · 02/03/2011 19:41

Thank you for sharing your experience BayeauxT your first MMC sounds very much like what's happened to me. Only thing is it looks like I may have mc'd at 5 weeks so its the lack of hb at that stage that makes it hard for them to say if it's an early pg which will progress or a MMC. I know deep down the result!

Just need to have it confirmed now so I can move on.

Reassuring to hear of all the successful pgs following a MMC/MC.

Hi Creamcraker

So sorry to hear this. I had a miscarriage in October. It was my first pregnancy.

I started spotting at 11 weeks so went for a scan and found the same as you - it hadn't progressed beyond 5 weeks. I asked for an ERPC and they said they would have to wait and scan me in a week even though I was sure of my dates. I started bleeding the next day and continued for 4.5 weeks until my constant calls to the hospital finally resulted in an ERPC. I had a period 2 weeks later and got pregnant on the next cycle. I am now 15 weeks and scared but things are looking ok so far.

Completely understand your need to move on and would recommend you push for an ERPC so it is over as soon as possible.

Hi creamcracker I’m ment to be 12 weeks today worked out from last period but woke up with a lot of blood and pain this morning so when hospital for scan showed I was only 5 weeks pregnant but baby is still attached to sack but I’ve been bleeding all day now I have to wait 7 days for another scan because they couldn’t detect a heart beat as to early it’s so worrying they said baby could’ve stopped growing they don’t Evan no 100% what has happened but we will see next week

Babybaby2025 · 31/12/2024 18:04

Hi @Pinky92 sorry you are going through this but this post is very old (2011) so I doubt they'll be back. Might be worth starting your own thread x

Pinky92 · 31/12/2024 19:07

I’ve literally just seen dates I wasn’t looking 🤣 thank you so much for messaging back
