Ouch! Why do my nipples hurt so much?

Hello lovely mumsnetters,

My nipples hurt so much I could cry! Does anyone have any tips on how to calm them down?

I'm 18+5 and my (usually tiny!) boobs were the first thing to start growing when I found out I was pregnant. The boobs themselves have been super sensitive since week 6 (poor DP has not been allowed near them since then!) but over the last few days my nipples feel like they've been rubbed with sandpaper. Is this normal? What can I do to ease the pain?

Thank you!

Unfortunately, this is just one of those horrible pregnancy symtoms, sensitive, painful nipples are quite normal at your stage.

There is isn't any miracle solution sadly but wearing very soft cotton clothing tends to help- so no bras with lace detailing.

Try to air your breasts as much as possible and avoid using soap or perfumed shower gel. When washing just use plain water. Ice packs are also handy for relieving some discomfort.

If they get really bad, you could try moisturising your nipples with Lansinoh cream. A good aid for periods of dry, cracked or sore nipples.

Hi,

I used to get really sore nipples in my first pregnancy, especially if they were going hard when I was cold. I used some olive oil to moisturise but it didn't help much I am afraid. Just wanted to let you know you weren't alone.

Thank you for reassuring me that it is normal at least!

Well...

This is the 3rd pregnancy with painful boobs for me! people think I am mad when I tell them that labour pains are a relief compared to this. It is sheer agony! to be honest I just want to chop them off at the moment :( it's been the same throughout. I am now 31 weeks and (deep joy) have just started leaking milk too.

There comes a time in the evening when I just flop them out for some air. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't..but everytime I do it I give someone an almighty shock Grin
