Do GPs/ MWs test for UTIs when they do their routine antenatal urine testing at each appointment or do you have to ask them to check specifically?

HI Jasmine, I thought I had a UTI recently and the GP did an on the spot test and said immediately that I didn't, so I am guessing they do during the routine tests, but if not it is pretty quick to find out. Having said that as a long time UTI sufferer, I also have had the on the spot test come back negative and then the sent away and properly tested test come back postive, I think you can sometimes have bacterial cystitus? Anyway, either way I hope you feel better, I think my suspected UTI just turned out to be baby tampolining on my bladder!

My MW says she'll do one at each appointment as I have a history but I have idea what is normal.

depends what dipsticks they use. if you have a uti you'd have other symptoms and could ask for a sample to be sent off to the lab for testing.

Hi Jasmine, My MW does a dipstick test everytime I visit either from a sample Ive took in or she gives me one to go wee on whilst there. Apparently they are not very acurate so everytime something has shown up on there Ive been given a sterile urine bottle to do the next morning and be sent off for a more through check. Im currently 34 weeks and have had to do this 5 times, twice I had a UTI and the rest nothing came of it.
I think most the time you get a warning with UTI's, I found I felt a bit poorly but couldnt put my finger on why (no real symptoms etc. just a bit under the weather IYSWIM) it stung when I peed and I had what felt like period pain. If you dont get routinely tested if you mention it to the MW im sure she would test for you. HTH

Thanks all - I'm trying to find out what is causing some tiredness and cramping and it has just been suggested to me that I might have a UTI. As I had a MW apt last week and a hosp checkup today for something else (where I gave a routine pee sample) I just wondered whether they would have picked it up without me mentioning it or whether I have to ask to be tested.
