Brown discharge, early bleeding and not doubling HCG

Hi,
I dont know if anyone out there can give me advice from their experiences?
My LMP was 13.01.11, and I had a 2 hour bright red bleed on 3.02.11, then 2 days later I did a hpt because my boobs were really sore and I had a faint positive! I then bled for 4 hours that afternoon, dark red blood, a little like red wine! (sorry for the detail! I assumed I had an early misscariage and went to the GP, who said there was nothing they could do!
My pregnancy symptoms continued, so I did another test 5 days later....POSTIVE! then I had a big spot of blood that day! I did another digital test the day later which said 1-2 weeks pregnant! Since then I have spotted brown discharge every 3-4 days, not pain, just normal uterus pulling discomfort, extreme tiredness, feeeling quesy and sore boobs!
My hcg on the 14.02.2011 was 350 (4+4 days)
21.02.2011 (5+4 days)1325
So not quite doubling, but rising!
I am booked into the early pregnancy unit on thursday and they hopefully will scan me as I will be 6 weeks and my hcg is above 1000!
Has anyone had anything similar, I am worried sick, and suffering from awful headaches, but no abdominal pain!
Thanks
Sharon :(

When we used to do BHCG when I worked on a Gynae ward, we would expect it to double in 48 hrs, not a week. Sorry, it's an awful thing to go through, especially when too early to get a definite answer from a scan Sad

angeljefferson · 22/02/2011 19:47

Hi, from what I understand doubling is every 48-72 hours, but mine works out every 85 hours, I dont understand why they tested my hcg 1 week apart instead of 48hrs?

That's what I would expect. Sounds odd but suppose different units may do things differently? You will drive uorself mad doing pregnancy tests, they would be positive for up to a few weeks after a miscarriage anyway, so won't confirm anything for you!

angeljefferson · 22/02/2011 20:05

But HCG would not increase from 350 to 1325 if
I had miscarried? all the bleeding was before my hcg test, my GP describes this as a viable pregnancy with threatenend miscarriage. My clear blue now reads 3+ weeks pregnant, and read 1-2 weeks just over a week ago, so I would take this as a good sign?

I hate to say this, but an ectopic pregnancy is a possibility with rising but not doubling HCG levels and brown discharge. I'm only saying this because it is what happened to me with similar symptoms (no abdominal pain to speak of either). I guess you should be prepared for the possibility. Have a look at the Ectopic pregnancy trust website for more information if you want.

However, obviously it could well be fine - early bleeding can just be implantation and also from my own experience things don't always match the textbooks in the early stages (my current pregnancy was measuring too small when I had an early scan at 7 weeks but now seems to be fine).

I know it's really hard to hang on in there with so much uncertainty and really hope you get an encouraging result from the scan if you have one. Bear in mind though, that they may not see much at a 6 week scan, so they may decide to hold off on scanning depending on what you HcG is doing. It's a horrible waiting game at this stage ;-)

Do look after yourself and try to take each day at a time. Hard I know!

angeljefferson · 22/02/2011 20:39

Thanks lilysma,
I do know that an eptopic pregnancy is a possibilty, and thats why my Gp has referred me for a scan on thursday to rule this out, at 6 weeks I should have a yolk sack with a fetal pole, and possibly a heart beat, although I do realise this could be seen later at 7 weeks!

How far along were you when you had your eptopic? I do not fall into any of the risk groups, and I have not had the 'prune juice' discharge. My spotting is intermittent and only lasts a few hours and then returns to clear? its really strange and I'm hoping it is old blood from the initial bleeding I had at implantation!

I'll keep you informed when I have my scan on thurday, at least I would know if it is implanted in the right place!

angeljefferson · 24/02/2011 13:44

Hi, I thought I'd give an update! Ive just been for my scan and they think I am only 5 weeks and I need to return for another scan in a week! I also have a fibroid the size of a plum, which could be the cause of the bleeding! so fingers cross3d for next week! I'm still spotting, but its slowing down again, only twinges and no serious pain, no clots and my little bean's sack is safely in my uterus and not eptopic! I have hope again!

I've been 'lurking' on this thread and want to post how pleased I am for you Smile
Glad it's not ectopic and will keep fingers crossed for you next week!

jenga079 · 24/02/2011 21:07

Very pleased for you. Hang on in there Smile

angeljefferson · 28/02/2011 10:21

Hi everyone, just to keep you up to date, I had a miscarriage on friday night and passed my little bean, it looked liked a small gooseberry and I felt it 'go'! The hospital cinfirmed this was my sac. We are gutted, but my pregnancy wasnt right from the start and I bled on and off since day 1, now I'm bleeding very heavy still and need to back back friday to see if the mc is complete. I hope it will all go naturally as I've heard a D&C can cause scaring, and we are keen to start straight away trying again! This was my second pregnancy, I have a healthy 13 year old, but I am now 36, so hopefully it will happen soon, this pregnancy was only after not taking the pill for 2 weeks, so I fell pregnant quite easily!

TooTiredtoGoogle · 28/02/2011 11:26

So sorry to hear your news Sad You'll have good days and bad days, just hold DP close and cry as much as you need to.

If it helps at all, there are lots of us on here who have miscarried in the past and are now pregnant again or have DC.

Good luck for when you try again xx

angeljefferson · 28/02/2011 20:24

Thanks Jenga,
Im overall positive and having 'moments', but to be honest it doesnt feel real yet. I cried alot last week while I was waiting for the scan, but only a little since the miscarriage, I suppose that is still to come!
Thanks for the luck, I'm pleased I found this site, it helps alot to talk to others who have been through similar experiences xx

Hello, Im not sure if anyone can give me any advice here or any hope as to what is happening during my pregnancy...

Im 6 weeks and 4 days today and yesterday morning when i woke up, i had period like cramps which lasted for about an hour. when i went to the toilet i had dark blood when wiped.

this continued throughout the day getting more red each time... sometimes it was quite thick and others watery (sorry for the detailed information!)

I know that this doesnt look like good news and isnt normal but is there any chance i havent lost my baby?

Im not due to go to the epu till tomorrow morning and have been resting but the wait is killing me...

has anyone else out there had similar experiences that have turned out ok??

chipmonkey · 01/03/2011 11:52

Hi Brooke. I have not had anything like you describe, but didn't want you to be ignored. You might be better starting a new thread? If you go to the top under "pregnancy" there is a button for "start new thread in this topic" You might get more replies.
Hope all is OK XX

brooke89 · 01/03/2011 14:11

thank you :) ive done that now xxx

angeljefferson · 01/03/2011 17:50

Hi Brooke, ring the EPU or the ward attached to it, they should tell you to come straight in or go to A&E, it doesnt look good, but I also so many people who have bled and also not miscarried. My pain was quite severe and I needed to stop when it came on, I also had alot of blood, but there were clots in it, it isnt good when there are clots, but that happenend a few hours after the pains and then I passed my babies sac.
Good luck to you, take care, and please go to A&E, my thoughts and prayers are with you xx
