Hi wonder if you can help. A friend has had an early scan and has been told that she is actually a couple of weeks earlier than she thought based on her LMP dates. What would you expect the scan to show at 5 weeks.

Many thanks

I had a scan at 6 weeks pg and the date they gave me then is the exact date I have been given at the 20 week scan! Amazing I think.

I don't think you would see much at 5 weeks other than the yolk sac. I don't think the heartbeat shows until around week 6/7.

hoxtonchick · 17/10/2005 16:28

i don't think you can see very much at 5 weeks. i had internal scan with dd when i was 6+3 & they measured her at exactly the right size & i saw the heartbeat. but you can't see much at all before 6 weeks.

Mirage · 17/10/2005 20:28

They'll probably just see a yolk sac, possibly a fetal pole (beginning of the heart),but no heartbeat yet as too early.

thank you so much for your responses. I had my fingers crossed that this was what should be seen and that in a couple of weeks when they go back they'll see a bit more. Thank you for the reasurance I can pass on.

at our 6 week scan dd looked like a little smudge! We got scanned every 2 weeks from 6 weeks and we have kept the scan's. They are in dd's photo album now and we plan to show them to dd when she is old enough to understand.
Amazing really that a little cell can be grown into a baby..dd is now 5 months and I still get teary when I think about it...

I had a scan at six weeks and couldnt realy see anything apart from the small egg sack, i was told to come back 2 weeks later.

A friend went for an early scan at 4 weeks (just after a BFP result) as she was having bad cramps and have m/c history. The scan showed a very thick endometrium indicating that she has missed her menses. However, she was told at that stage it was too early to see the sac yet. She was asked to go for another scan at 6 weeks.

Her biggest worry is that if that is normal not to see the sac at 4 weeks? Anyone with any information in regard to this so that i pass on to my friend I will really appreciate.

sniff · 19/10/2005 13:27

mine at 5 weeks was nothing really to see but a sac it looked like a lighter part thats all at six weeks it looked like a bean I would tell her not to worry easy I know because thats all I have done since

Thanks for all the reasurances, it's great to know that they are heading in the right direction. I'm passing on your experiences so thanks.

with both pregnancies ive had early scans at 5 weeks, both times all we saw was the yolk sac, when we went back 2 weeks later it was much clearer and saw heartbeat and small blob of baby

abbey1515 · 26/10/2005 10:35

Hi
Could anyone tell me how a scan is performed at six weeks? Have just read some conflicting information- is it via the 'jelly on abdomen method' or via vaginal probe? Please help!

hoxtonchick · 26/10/2005 14:01

i had both methods at 6 weeks, but the probe was much clearer & showed a heartbeat. unpleasant but worth it.

abbey1515 · 27/10/2005 22:23

It was unpleasant, but definitely worth it! Saw lots of movement and a heartbeat.

hoxtonchick · 27/10/2005 22:27

. i think my dd was 6mm when i first saw her on the scan at 6 weeks & now she's asleep next to me. amazing.

Lel1972 · 27/10/2005 22:37

hi - i had an internal scan at 7 weeks with DD, they said they may not be able to see anything that early as it's very difficult before 6 weeks, and after then it's still quite hard as the sac is so small. we were able to see what looked like a very small grain of rice, and the heartbeat, but only when it was pointed out to us, it was very hard to see! hope that reassures...
