Doing a "leaking waters" test

So I've been having a lot of discharge lately and I guess I'm paranoid about my waters leaking so I've just put on a pair of new knickers and I'm going to sit down for a while and see what happens. Is this a good test? Would my knickers have to be pretty much soaked to prove that my waters are leaking? And what kind of time frame are we talking about.

I realise I probably sound crazy but I need reassurance!

Hi, how many weeks are you?

I dont know the answe to your question but have been having the same thing. I am 27 weeks and sometimes feel like I have wet myself and find a small patch of watery cm.

I an thinking you would know about it if it was waters? Im hoping anyway!

niamh29 · 18/02/2011 21:38

I'm almost 36 weeks

Same as me niamh - lots of watery discharge and nearly 36 weeks. I tend to have a lot after waking up in the morning and then not much else after that.

Another thing you could do is get Amniosense pads which detect the pH of the fluid. They are pricey and so another option is get pH paper from a pet shop/nursery that sells aquarium stuff.

The way the hospital checked if mine was amniotic fluid (or wee) was to smell it. Wee smells like wee (obviously) but amniotic fluid is inoffensive and slightly sweet.
If you are leaking fluid you need to tell your MW as it could mean your baby is being exposed to bacteria.
Mine was amniotic fluid (but I was over my due date by then) and my hospital had a policy of delivering a baby by 48 hours of this occurring.
This would be different I daresay for someone earlier on in pregnancy.
It's not uncommon to leak a bit of wee as your bladder gets squashed or to have changes in your vaginal discharge.

Another clue for me was that I didn't leak much when standing up and the babys head stopped the water coming out so much and I leaked more when lying down.

Go to hospital and get them to check.

Can I ask a really silly question??

If you get PH paper, what colour is it/should it turn if there is presence of amniotic fluid?

I know I probably sound extremely Confused but I genuinely dont have a clue!

Thanks! Smile

if you get nitrazine paper, my understanding is that it should turn blue but do a google search. have you tried it?

Moodykat · 19/02/2011 20:25

This happened to me at around 35 weeks I think. I went into maternity unit to have it checked. They made me lie down for a while so it could "pool" (nice!) and then they were going to test it...never happened due to further issues but nothing to do with waters! They said it was probably just wee! Its always worth getting it checked out though. I know we often feel like we are over reacting or causing a fuss if we phone the midwives or maternity units, and I know they are busy, but as my sister explained to me (she's a Dr) it is what they are paid for!

clouiseg · 19/02/2011 20:40

I haven't tried it....but I think its useful to know Smile

Has anyone tried it with PH paper? Am really intrigued now!!

sh77 · 19/02/2011 21:00

If I can get to a pet shop then will get some tomorrow and report back. BUT I am not advocating self diagnosis - always get checked out by MW.

Good advice sh!

Will check in and see what your findings are Grin
