When you did you start getting strech marks? Which creams/oils did you use to prevent them and were these effective?

MNHQ Update
This is an old thread, but if you've landed here while on the hunt for recommendations or advice on stretch mark treatment and prevention, our guide to the best stretch mark cream has been recently updated. It includes a wide range of options and has been compiled based on the advice of Mumsnetters and skincare experts. We hope it's helpful! Flowers

IIRC I started getting stretch marks with DD1 at about 7 months. I'd been using Palmer's Cocoa Butter stuff, which I'd thought was working up till then...

My conclusion in the end was that if you're going to get stretchmarks then you're going to get stretch marks. Oils and creams don't make that much difference, but they do make life a lot more comfortable :)

littlemissw · 17/02/2011 14:31

With DC1 I never got any & with DC2 I got them at 39 weeks. I used Bio-oil during both pregnancies. I don't think what you use makes any difference, it simply depends on your skin type.

Bramshott · 17/02/2011 14:34

I don't have any Blush

I was a very lucky lass and got my first stretch mark at the age of 11 when my boobs decided to grow over night Hmm. As such there is pretty much nothing I can do to escape them in pregnancy, as it is pretty much down to genetics, and as far as I am aware the stretch mark creams on the market will only work to diminish the scarring once you have them rather than prevent them.

So I have resisted any temptation to waste money buy expensive creams none of which are going to work, but to make myself feel better I have continued my normal routine of all over mositurising with cocoa butter but added in second coat for the bump just on the off chance.

Sorry that is probably of no help to you.

Leilababyno1 · 17/02/2011 14:39

Think it's totally genetic and agree with Tangle.

If your mum had them, you'll probably get them- if she didn't, you may be in luck!

Still moisturising is good. I am using Burts Bees belly butter- and so far (30 wks) don't have any. My mum never got any though, so fingers crossed!Smile

I got some during puberty (inner thighs and bum).

During first pregnancy I used oils religiously and was very proud that I didn't get any on my tummy (some at the sides at the very end).

Pride comes before a fall...my milk came in 3 days after the birth, boobs were enormous and, bingo, huge purple stretch marks all over them. Don't forget the boobs, ladies!

As for which oils I used, I used Bio-Oil, Clarins and Decleor.

CluckyKate · 17/02/2011 14:54

I used Bio-Oil religiously with my first and was convinced it had worked until I went on holiday where the bathroom mirror was low enough to reveal the mass of red cobwebs growing on the underside of my bump [grr].

Am now expecting my second and was resigned to getting them again....am now 15 days overdue and still no sign of any appearing.
Complete mystery to me Smile

I haven't got any yet, but I'm only 28+3, so plenty of time still! I've got marks on my sides and thighs, so I'm not holding my breath.

I've been using Clarins Stretchmark Control lotion ever since my bump started appearing, but more due to the fact that my bump skin was/is quite itchy, and the lotion gives a lot of relief. I also like it because it doesn't smell of anything!

But I've also tried Neal's Yard Mother's Balm, which is a bit richer than the Clarins one, but also very nice.

I agree that it probably won't make any difference as to wether you get strech marks or not, but it makes you feel better!

saoirse86 · 17/02/2011 15:23

My twin sister and I both got loads of stretch marks during puberty so we thought we were both guaranteed to get them during pregnancy.

She got loads of stretch marks at about 27 weeks despite using loads of bio-oil.

I hardly used anything but I only got one on my bum which I didn't find until DD was 2 weeks old so not sure when it appeared Hmm

This was also nothing to do with age as our DD's were due 6 days apart.

humph123 · 17/02/2011 15:24

I've been using bio-oil. not sure if it works as 24 weeks. it's cheaper from amazon.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 17/02/2011 15:53

Not one until 36 +3! by 42 weeks they were up to my bra line!!!! I also got them during puberty so I agree, its probably genetic/predisposed!

hellymelly · 17/02/2011 16:01

I got them as a teenager, when I grew 6" in a year,on my legs and hips ,but I hardly got any while pregnant,a few on my hips, none on tummy or breasts.I used a spezia organics body cream, and the marks appeared after I gave birth, when I stopped using it,which may be coincidence, may be that I just couldn't see them because my bump was in the way,I have no idea.None with DD2 anyway.

lolajane2009 · 17/02/2011 18:20

I have severe stretchmarks after losing 7 stone over a year and a half. i am expecting more this pregnancy.

eagerbeagle · 17/02/2011 19:04

I got loads (on underside of bump) at 37 weeks with DS, appeared overnight, and I was feeling all smug that I hadn't got any until then.

lilly13 · 17/02/2011 20:30
