Weight gain and birth weight

This is my 3rd and the past 2 pregnancies I have gained 3st each time, around half a stone more then recommended. Their birth weights were 8lb4.5oz and 9lb5.5oz. This time I am trying (although beginning to fail) to keep a closer eye on my weight and be better with my eating. My concern is that I am huge already (25 weeks) and sooooooooo many people make helpful comments. I have 15 weeks left and am beginning to feel down about the size I am and am going to be. The trouble is when I feel down I eat rubbish (have just scoffed 4 chocolate biscuits Blush). I've only put a stone so far which I know is fine, and less then the last two times at this point and yet I am a whale.

I was just wondering whether those of you who put on a fair bit of weight went on to have big babies or is there very little relation to maternal weight?

Sorry, this is a bit of a rambling post. Can't seem to sort my thoughts out about it all . . . . .

Sadly, I think it's random. I had my biggest gain with my smallest baby, and smallest gain with the middle-sized one.

I put on about 3 and a half stone with my first, he was 8lb 2oz. My sis gains a lot when pregnant too - she's had a 5lb10oz, an 8lb 14oz and a 7lb 4oz. Think maternal weight not the determining factor to be honest. And I also think some people just gain a lot when pregnant and some don't. We both lost the weight afterwards.

Have put on well over a stone so far at 17 weeks so sounds like you're doing really well!

I put on 3 1/2 stone and DD was 6lb 14oz. My sister put on nearly 5 stone she thinks and her DD was 6lb 12oz.

I put on only 2stone, had an 8lb11oz!!

So no relation then! Looks like I will just have to concede to being big when pregnant :) To be honest it isn't the birth weight that's worrying me, more the destruction of my stomach muscles and back and was hoping in the back of my mind that I could in some way pretend to control it! Oh well, onwards and outwards . . . .

I put on 2 stone with my first pregnancy, and my son weighed 9lb 11oz, this time round i am 20 weeks pregnant, havent put on anything at all so far, but baby growing fine as have had quite alot of scans due to bleeding etc-

During my first pregnancy the weight didnt start to go on until i was around 6 months

mrsravelstein · 17/02/2011 16:42

ds1 - 3 stone, he was 8lbs

ds2 - 2.5 stone, he was 9.5lbs

dd - 2 stone, she was 6lbs

BUT, with 1&2 i lost the weight within 6-8 weeks. dd it took nearly 3 months. go figure.

Put on 2 stone. Had a 5.5lb DD on the due date.

Knackered I know how you feel, I'm only 16 weeks and am already HUGE!.
I do think though no matter what you do you end up more or less the same size everytime!.
My first I put on 4 stone!!! was a pre pregnancy size 10 and ended up an 18!!!, lost 2 stone almost instantly after birth...so actually think alot is fluid!...pregnant again within 6 months (Oooops) went huge again, and was very active as I had DD to look after, as well as swimming, gyming 5 times a week.

Lost all weight at "Fat Club" weight watchers within 10 months and was back to a ten.

Now pushing a 14 in normal clothes already!!! I just try to tell myself the bigger I bloom, it's for my baby, and as long as he or she is growing well, I will concentrate on shifting my weight after the birth.
I personally think you get a new found energy to get your body back after 9 months+ of harvesting your babe.

As the ladies has written before, we all probably gain more than we want, but we do lose it in time.

Enjoy your pregnancy, I know sometimes it's uncomfortable...but really is a special time Smile.

i know exactly how u feel with DD i put on over 3 and a half stone stopped weighing myself at this point lol, i am now 27 wks pg with no2 and altho i vowed to try to be more sensible food wise than i was last time (and i think i have) i have still put on around 16-17lb which according to the weight gain calculater is normal for an average BMI but the weight is now going on thick and fast and im dreading trying to lose it agen i still hadnt lost the last 10lb from DD 17 months later when i got pregnant agen :(

GruffalosGirl · 18/02/2011 09:47

I put on 3 1/2 stone with DS and he was 8lb14 but I went to yoga, swam every week, walked everywhere and ate really healthily.

This pregnancy I have put on 2 1/2 stone and eaten nothing but cake, biscuits and crisps and done no exercise whatsoever. I am having a DD this time. I am 37 weeks.

I have come to the conclusion that my body will do whatever it likes and there's no point worrying about it as what I put into it seems to make no difference.

Don't worry about it, I don't think there's anything you can do.

knackered76 · 18/02/2011 09:51

Thanks ladies :) I think what's bothering me at the moment is that I am getting soooooo many comments from people about how big I am. I have 15 weeks left and looks like I'll have to put up with people telling me I'm huge for every day of them :( I know I apparently just do big when pregnant but why do people need to comment on it?!?

Strangely the thought of a 10lb doesn't bother me . . . . . maybe I'm a little bit weird Grin

I don't get weighed cos I am big to start with so darent lol, but my heaviest was 9lb 8 and none of the others came within a pound of him, smallest 6lb 14. I usually put loads on. I put 5 stone on with my eldest who was only 8lb7 but lost 3 stone after I had him. This one I have been huge all the way through, but according to my growth scan she is perfect weight so sometimes I think it depends on how they are lying :)
