I am 22 weeks pg next weekend when DH and I are off for a much-awaited long weekend break on Norfolk. I love fresh crab and the area where we are staying has loads of amazing places to eat, including lots of fresh crab recipes! I know as a general rule you shouldn't eat shellfish but what exactly are the risks if I break the rules?

Thought this was a my valentines day has gone very wrong post Grin

Seriously I ate all sorts of seafood during both my pregnancies because no one told me I shouldn't. There is a risk of mercury poisoning if you live on tuna but other than that I can't actually see the risk.

Wow. I really thought this post was going to be about something completely different.

I ate everything they said I shouldn't while pregnant. Enjoy your crabs.

Haha sorry guys! Didn't mean to mislead you Blush

Oh don't worry, I thought it was hilarious Grin In fact I'm bumping this so more people can wander in and get confused Grin

Another confused one! Confused

As long as you've cooked your crabs, they are OK - think it's raw seafood like oysters that is the potential problem?

lolajane2009 · 14/02/2011 22:10

lol such a funny title... you've made my day.

happycamel · 14/02/2011 22:16

also initially confused and now rather amused Grin

Hot cooked crab (eg crab cakes) should be absolutely fine. You'd be advised to be wary of chilled seafood just because of extra risks to you and baby of food poisoning, pregnancy lowers the immune system so its harder to fight off.

If it doesn't smell or look great then be careful but otherwise have fun.

Well, I was naughty last night and had dressed crab as a starter for my valentines meal - oops!
Think its because it could have some bacteria called listeria on some uncooked fish / meat?
I feel ok today?!Confused

Love crab and would eat it while pregnant - been craving prawns and regularly eat them

lilly13 · 15/02/2011 15:51

I have fresh crab meat on several occassions during pregnancy. I think as long as you get food from a place with high hygene standards, it should be ok...

lolajane2009 · 15/02/2011 16:20

midwife said prawns are fine as long as they are cooked.
