Hi all,

Ive got my 20 week scan tomorrow. Ive been trying to get through to the maternity unit for 2 hours with no luck, all i want to know is if i have to take a urine sample! Anyone know?? (i realise it may be different for different trusts but just a general idea would be good.)
Also, whilst im here, how many people were allowed in with you? My OH is coming but my mother is trying to muscle her way in too saying that her friend was allowed in with her daughter and partner....ive tried explaining its a diagnostic test, not a free for all but it goes in one ear and comes out the other!

Thanks x

I think at the 20 week scan you usually see a Dr or MW too, so yes take a u/s. My letter for mine asked me to.

The number of people allowed depends on health trust. If you don't want your Mum there, just tell her she is not allowed.

SlightlyTubbyHali · 14/02/2011 14:35

It'll depend on whether it is just a scan or a MW appointment as well. But does it matter? Drink something on the way there and pee on arrival if you need to give a sample.

I would expect you can probably take your mother in too. Or she could come and if they limit numbers she could just wait outside. Sounds like you think she's being a bit pushy though, so why not just tell her it is not allowed and that you've checked with the hospital (a little white lie for a little bit of peace, if that's what you're after).

Oh, and enjoy...tis a great scan!

Take a sample if they dont need it throw it away. I always forget and they then always ask me to do one! There will be sample pots there if your not sure. As for your mum I can say after going to 2 different hospitals for scans they seem to have different rules. One was me and one other person only. The other was me partner my son (5yrs old) and my mum were allowed. So it does vary. I would ring up ans check about the amount of people allowed in for the scan. If you dont want your mum there just say I have rang and they said me and Partner only. Smile

I didn't have to provide a sample but mine was only a scan, no midwife or anything. Check your letter, they're usually pretty clear about what's going to happen.

My Mum, MIL and dh came to mine because I wanted them there. If you don't want your Mum there tell her so.

Leilababyno1 · 14/02/2011 14:40

I didn't need to give a urine sample...and at my hospital in south west London, they only allowed 1 person in with me- as it's quite an important diagnostic scan, they usually prefer to keep the appointmant as private as possible, until the sonographer has deemed all is ok.

Good-luck and enjoy!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 14/02/2011 14:42

I wouldn't worry about the sample - I always do one there when I go for a scan.

Pretty sure you could take your Mum if you wanted to, but if you want it to be just you and DH then tell her there is no room Wink

Leilababyno1 · 14/02/2011 14:42

typo- appointment...duh?

wolfcubEm83 · 14/02/2011 14:55

Thanks ladies, im pretty sure i'll be able to provide a sample on cue anyway!!
Mom is being a bit pushy, its her first grandchild and to be honest shes more bloody excited than we are!! (we're a bit more nervous than excited Blush) I'll let her come with us and just ask when we get there otherwise i'll never hear the end of it.

No, didn't need one at either of mine.

kiwijesta · 15/02/2011 06:40

I've had scans at 3 hospitals in two different areas and both were me and one other person only. You could suggest she shouts you a private scan if she's that desperate, and then you'd get extra pictures, HTH.
Oh, and I always forgot my sample and they always have jars there if need be.

cece123 · 15/02/2011 22:51

i have my 20 wk scan in few days and my letter states that i don't have to bring a u/s or have a full bladder, plus only one person can be with me

Sparklies · 15/02/2011 23:28

I've never had to give a urine sample at any scans, and I've probably had upwards of 40 or more over the years at several different hospitals.

Of course, your hospital could be different!!
