I know you're not expected/supposed to put on any weight in the first tri - I swore, after a total pregnancy gain of 3 and a hlaf stone last time, that I would be more sensible this time. But I felt so sick, and carbs helped so much. Grin

13 weeks today and I have put on a total so far of 12-13 pounds!!! Blush

I know it won't help when I get nearer the end, I'll be more tired, more backache, more breathless, but I can't seem to help myself!

Anyone care to reassure me that I'm not the only one who has put on weight? It'll make me beat myself up less.

I am only 8-9 weeks pregnant and I am eating like a horse and I can't seem to stop myself!

My jeans are already tight. So I feel your pain. I keep telling myself that when the tiredness passes that I will get out and about and exercise more to counteract it.

If it makes you feel any better, my sister has just announced that she is getting married in June and I am maid of honour! So I will look like a whale compared to everyone else and I won't be able to avoid photos like I did during my last pregnancy. So I really need to get a grip on my eating but it seems to fend off the queasiness.

reddaisy · 13/02/2011 10:44

And you are braver than me, no chance I am weighing myself until a good few months after the baby is born!

thornykate · 13/02/2011 10:47

Hi lindy, I am happy to post as the same thing happens to me everytime although I have noticed that either you & I are in the minority in gaining so much OR that most people who openly admit how much weight they are gaining are the ones who don't gain much!

I have gained a stone in 1st 12-14 weeks in all 4 pgs but haven't always put loads more on, the strange thing is that at 25 weeks I can still get in my larger 'normal' clothes with the buttons undone & a belly band so I can't be that huge.

After the initial 1st trimester gain last time I only put on another half stone throughout the rest of the pg so maybe its just the way some peoples bodies work? It will be more than that this time though but I haven't done anything differently.

As you are feeling better you will probably go back to eating healthier food so won't necessarily get really big :)

lindy100 · 13/02/2011 10:47

Thanks reddaisy. I'm too big for size 12 jeans, but too small for size 12 maternity, thank god!

I didn't weigh myself until v near the end with dd, so chances are I'm gaining in the same way as before. I'm clinging to the fact that I finally lost all baby weight and more, which meant I started this pg half a stone in credit compared to last time!

I agree, it does fend off the queasiness. And if you tell people that you will look like a whale at your sister's wedding (I'm sure you will just look lovely and pregnant, by the way!), people will say things like 'well, you will be pregnant'!

People seem to pass me the cakes more now I'm pregnant. Though MIL did tell me to stop eating or 'you'll be enormous'. Tell me something I don't know Angry

I did the same, but haven't put on any weight in the 2nd tri and have been gaining slowly but steadily in the third. Remember not all of the weight you gain is fat. Your blood volume increases, you retain water, the placenta weighs around 1.5 kg by the time you are full term.

As long as you can stay reasonably active and are eating healthy food then I think your weight gain will be what it will be.

lindy100 · 13/02/2011 10:51

Thanks thorny and fantail - I cetrainly have been eating healthily today and planning a swim tomorrow!

I love how other people feel like they can comment on our eating as if it suddenly isn't rude!

For me, my eating is more to boost my energy levels than because I am hungry. Yesterday I was so groggy after a nap that I got DP to bring me a glass of lemonade just to get me going again. I was very Shock at myself!

I do get more energy in the second trimester and when the weather perks up then I will definitely get my bike out a bit etc so hopefully that will help. I am convinced that breastfeeding helped me lose most of the pregnancy weight very quickly last time so fingers crossed that it will happen again.

I am dreading that bloody wedding, I don't want to wear a big eyecatching bridesmaid dress, I would rather just be a guest but no chance of that!

reddaisy · 13/02/2011 10:54

Oh, and I have been insaitably (spl) thirsty so I am convinced some of my weight gain must be water. Although the middle of the night trips to the toilet have started already so who knows Grin

JimmyChoo17 · 13/02/2011 11:08

Yep hate how people feel need to comment on food habits. I was having a queasy day so had to load up on carbs and my boss came out with but you have already had breakfast and a snack why such a big lunch (jacket potato)? I suppose u r eating for 2... Everyone commented then...so I jsut turned round to him and said it was to stop me being sick and affecting work time but whilst we are on the subject....what's your excuse????!!!

Felt a tad naughty and scared my p 45 was about to arrive...but luckily he looked most embarrassed and has stopped commenting since and shut the others up.

In my first trimester I put about about 4 albs but felt like more then I lost nearly 10 lbs as my sickness was worse at start of 2nd trimester and was ill...have now gained back those 10lbs bump is not massive but my thighs are....:( was a little overweight to begin with and now just feel fat and frumpy and uncomfortable with myself. Not really a construcitve post just wanted u to know others feel the same. I'm only on my first and get the impression after a slow start...I am going to be massive. Butt and thighs....groan...

nannyl · 13/02/2011 11:44

im 10 weeks and so far. have lost a stone Shock

(due to severe sickness)

lolajane2009 · 13/02/2011 11:50

i wish I didnt have morning sickness. Even the thought of food repulses. i had gained about 5lb at one point. I am now 9 weeks have gained 2 and a half pounds but belly is sticking out....

beckie90 · 13/02/2011 11:51

i was down over a stone but believe me i would rather have gained i looked ill. size 6 clothes was too big on me.
i would say dont worry bout it, your weight gain will probly end up evening itself out

dribbleface · 13/02/2011 12:19

I gained lots of weight in 1st trimester last time, hardly any in middle (well relatively Wink) and lots in the last. Overall weight gain was 3 1/2 stone which is a lot but i needed to eat to stop retching.

Same again this time, am only 7 weeks but just know i have gained too much already.

I will worry about it once bubba is here.

emoo777 · 13/02/2011 12:37

I always put on loads of weight in the first tri too. I mean my belly is sticking out so it can't just be overindulgence as otherwise it would be evenly distributed! I think if your body does this you just have to accept it(easier said than done). Someone posted pictures of me on facebook this morning and we are just about to announce but haven't yet so its the worst stage. I look like a whale!

sunshineoutdoors · 13/02/2011 15:18

I really hate that people start commenting on how much I'm eating. I'm normally quite small and eat healthily, I've been so sick for 1st trimester and snacking regularly has really helped.

At work it has become a running joke that I'm always eating, is starting to really get to me. Someone even said " ha ha I'm looking forward to seeing you when you come back to work after the baby, you'll be waddling in!" HOW RUDE to imply that you will gain pleasure from me becoming fat. Yes I am eating more but I am growing a baby.

This is a rant but I wish people would be more sensitive. I was told I was stuffing my face again when someone caught me eating a RYVITA as a snack!

It's my first time pregnant and it's hard enough getting used to the way my body is changing, boobs and tummy (and bum and thighs!) getting bigger without other people making me super paranoid I'm eating too much/getting fat.

I know people don't mean to sound rude but I feel like telling them they're on the verge of making me want to diet, which I know would not be the right thing for my pregnancy.... maybe this might make them shut up!

I think we should be able to relax and accept our changing bodies. If my body is crying out for food I think I should listen to it at the moment.

Phew! sorry about the rant I didn't realise how much this was getting to me!

Anyway OP, don't stress and do what your body feels like doing, don't fret about how your body is changing, it's what your body obviously needs to do for your baby. I promise I'll try to do the same too.....

coastgirl · 13/02/2011 15:48

I'm 14 weeks, no morning sickness but two bouts of illness so I have only put on 4/5 pounds and I'm fairly slim to start with. It would be more if I hadn't been ill, I'm sure, as I am always hungry and eat non-stop!

The only person who has commented is one guy at work - one of the first things he said to me after I told him my news was about me not eating too much Hmm and after I'd eaten my lunch one day and confessed I was still starving he said "well, you might not be eating for two, but the baby certainly is". I was not impressed. My DH is constantly pressing food on me, as a comparison!

You do what you have to do - different people react differently and our bodies aren't all the same. I always feel I burn food quickly and I have spent a lot of time so far feeling almost faint with hunger despite eating loads more than normal. I just can't eat enough!

lindy100 · 13/02/2011 16:03

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. And so sorry for all of you who are losing weight due to sickness. That sounds horrible :(

I'm 10+3 and have put on around 6-7lbs since 25th December (so my Wii fit tells me). I know this is probably a bit too much and I'm not sure how as I've not been eating crap. My belly seems quite a bit bigger and everyone tells me it's not a bump :(

The way I see it, we're only going to get bigger bellies so may as well get used to it!

witches · 14/02/2011 20:04

Sunshine outdoors i could have written ur post! most people are lovely and encourage u to simply enjoy pregnancy and don't stress about weight.
But then... the charmers who comment oh ull be the side of a house, eating again?, has the doctor been monitoring your weight? It has made me paranoid and i know in my heart of hearts at the moment its def all baby/water. People just don't seem to get how rude it is. Iv put on about 11pounds and im only 17wks. Sometimes i think if you were slim people take great delight in you getting bigger!

lindy100 · 15/02/2011 08:39

witches I totally agree with you about people being pleased when you gain weight Angry

cockle84 · 15/02/2011 13:16

I put on about a stone in the first 3 months then nothing for a few weeks. Now 36 weeks on thurs and have put on a total of 2.5 stone.

humph123 · 15/02/2011 13:24

i felt as though i was constantly eating during the first trimester due to nausea, i defintely put weight on then. 2nd trimester as nausea has now gone i'm trying to just eat normally as dont want to be a massive momma! it's the exercise i'm having difficulty with or rather lack of.

MrsVidic · 15/02/2011 13:49

16 weeks and 9 pounds. That's with me still going the gym!

theonlyhb2 · 15/02/2011 14:16

typically, since finding out I am pregnant, I am the lightest weight I have been for years (HG has helped too) yet I have gone up 3 bra sizes and 1 or 2 sizes up in shops (only on certain clothes). I bought my first maternity jeans yesterday - am 14 weeks today and I will be surprised if they still fit at 20 weeks!

theonlyhb2 · 15/02/2011 14:17

and when I say certain clothes, my wardrobe now consists of leggings, flat boots, massive tops and flowery dresses!
