Those of you who've had big babies - were you offered any extra scans with subsequent babies?

I'm only 10 weeks but still waiting for the first m/w appointment and this is one of my many wonderings!

DD (baby no 2) was 10.7lbs. Labour was uncomplicated but blooming painful compared to my 1st born (7.7lbs!). Is it likely that baby will be monitored this time does anyone know?

TIA!

Yes, I had a couple of growth scans with my DD, but it wasn't just because my last was big (9lbs 9oz at 37 weeks) but because I was again measuring about 6-7 weeks larger than dates. I had a nice normal 7lbs 9oz baby at 38 weeks the second time around, but it was very reassuring to have them monitor the size. They also did the GTT with me because DS was so big, just to rule out gestational diabetes.

DD was 10lb at 42 weeks. DS was 8lb 9oz at 39 weeks. I had cs's with both though. I had an extra scan with DS at 34 weeks, although I think this was more to check a kidney problem. This pg they do seem to have noticed that both children were slightly large. MW told me I'd be monitored by the consultant at 36 weeks, which I presume means I'll get measured and have a scan, although I think they're only doing this because I want a 'vbac'.

DS1 was 9lbs 1oz but he had a HUGE head (comes from his father's side!). I wasn't offered any extra scans on my subsequent pregnancy, although the midwife did tell me that I have 'a pelvis like a bucket' (that phrase will never leave me Grin) so maybe that's why!!

Thank you both. From what I've googled I think the protocol varies from area to area so will just have to see what is said!

I don't think if you are measuring normal on 12/20 week scans you will be treated any differently, unless problems arise.

I had a large second baby, 9lb 10oz, cleared the gtt but had miles more fluid than necessary. I did actually have a couple of growth scans with him.

For my third I had the same treatment until 12 weeks, when I had a cyst, then at 28 weeks I had the gtt which was +. I had millions of scans in that pg. He was measuring elephant like from 20 weeks, I was treated for the diabetes, and despite scan estimates of 11 lb + he was 8lb9oz, positively dinky.

Don't think you will be treated differently on the strength of a previous baby.

I had a stand in midwife who suspected baby was big and sent me for a scan as I had previously had one over 9lb 8. but otherwise not. She was wrong in any case lol.

DS was over 9lb and his head was just shy of 38cm, it was a fairly straightforward labour but very long with over three hours of pushing, mainly down to him being face up with his head tilted, and he pretty much tore me a new one when he eventually decided to finally come out.

First thing I asked my midwife when I got pregnant again was whether they'd monitor growth. I had scans every four weeks with DS because I had repeated bleeds and they wanted to keep an eye on things so I knew from those that he'd be big, the consultant said he'd induce me at 40 weeks because of the bleeds and because they estimated he'd be around 11lb so he didn't like the idea of me going over. There was no need in the end because I went into labour at 39+5. The midwife told me that they would only monitor baby's growth if her belly measurements were showing big/small and that a big baby is "nothing".

It must depend on which PCT you live in.

DS1 was 9lb at term, DS2 was 10lb at 38 weeks. They knew he was going to be big as I was already having scans every 4 weeks regarding a kidney problem he has, but it was never mentioned at all. I had him naturally with no tears/stitches etc.

DS3 was 6lb 14oz at 37 weeks. Never once during his pregnancy was DS 2's birthweight mentioned, nor did they feel the need to do any growth scans. Maybe as I had a fairly easy birth?

dc1 was 9lb 5oz, was emergancy c-section due to 'prolongued 2nd stage' - an hour of pushing and nothing, ventouse didnt work, she was facing the wrong way 2. 2nd pregnancy i got sent 4 gestational diabetes test (as daibates can cause big babies) and also got an extra scan near the end and a few trips 2 the consultant, they guessed dc2's weight right- 7lb 13.5oz-natural birth.
this time around will c consultant again but havent met him/her yet so dont know what the plan is.
a friend of myn had a 9lb 6oz boy but her 2nd pregnancy wasnt monitored due to babies size, cant remember 2nd babies weight, shes just had her 3rd-all vaginal births-10lb 3oz!!!! (but no extra scans 4 size)
