Hello,

I'm 8 months pregnant and currently living in Mexico. I will be coming back to the UK in July (when she is approx 4 1/2 months) and will be having a big operation. Due to the general anaesthetic and antibiotics that I will be on for a while afterwards I need to have her weaned onto formula by the time this operation arrives.

I am concerned that formulas are different in different countries and that it could be a problem for her to move from one brand to another. Has any one had any experience of this? I am wondering whether it is necessary to get hold of formula available in the UK to start her o whilst in Mexico, or whether it shouldn't matter.

Also, any recommended brands?

Thanks very much!

I always buy whatever is on offer and have done so in Australia, Belgium & France with no ill effects. DS never seems to notice the difference.

Try and get him to eat a non-Petit Filou however, EVEN IF YOU DECANT IT INTO A PETIT FILOU POT, and all hell breaks loose.

if you are very concerned, and would prefer to breastfeed, then you could consider expressing milk once you get back to the uk and freezing it, then just using a combination of that and some formula until she can be breastfed again. as long as you express you should be ok?

If you do wean her completely onto formula however I think I would tend to buy something that is available in the UK. Most babies will be fine with a change in formula, but others don't take it so well
that said, I don't know that formulas are indentical in each country anyway even if they're sold under the same name

Took DS to Norway when he was 9 weeks and he didn't even notice when I gave him the formula I bought there - no ill effects either.

Are you sure you can't carry on breastfeeing? I didn't think GA was a medical reason to stop, and some AB's are accepted as safe for use by breastfeeding mothers. If you need something very specific and unusual then that may well not be the case - but if you would much rather BF then it might be worth double checking by getting a second opinion. You can get independent advice here.

Hope it all goes well, whatever happens :)
