Rhesus sensitised - but no antibodies found??

Hi all,

I am Rhesus sensitised. I know this because my blood type is RH-ve, my 2 DCs (separate pregnancies) were Rh+ve and were both treated for Rhesus disease at birth (5 days phototherapy, 3 months folic acid).

I am now pregnant with DC3 and have queried my consultant about what kind of extra care I will receive (e.g. will I have more regular blood tests/scans/ etc to see how the baby is doing - Rh disease can be pretty serious after all).

All they have said is that I have no antibodies in my blood and as such they won't be doing anything extra.

I'm now totally confused - I thought that if I was sensitised that I would alway have antibodies. The consultant didn't seem to know about this and couldn't answer my question. She also couldn't answer why my blood tests did not find antibodies in either of my previous pregnancies (either that or else there were antibodies and it wasn't flagged up).

I've got another appt in 8 weeks with another consultant, but it's a bit of a long time to wait!!! I know that sentitisation is a pretty rare occurrance these days, but if anyone knows anything about this or has had a similar experience then I'd love to hear from you.

Hey - snap, I've just posted a similar question in conception because I too have been rhesus sensitised. TTC number two now but just not getting pregnant and worried that this is the cause - if they failed to zap all the antibodies (I had loads, and didn't have my final anti-d injection until longer than 72 hrs after birth) would that stop me getting pregnant again?

Hi Munki - cheers for replying. Seems like there's not many of us sensitised ladies around!

Sorry to hear you're having probs conceiving. I've been lucky on that front, so maybe being Rhesus sensitised has nothing to do with it. Mind you, I don't know how my antibody levels were at the births of DS1 & DS2.

Maybe you could get a blood test to see what your levels are now?

Good luck.
