When should I see the doctor?

Have just found out I am 4-5 weeks pregnant and can't remember from the first time round when I went to see the doctor.

At that appointment I remember him arranging the scan and he told me to make my first midwife appointment.

Don't want to go too early but also not to leave it too late.

When did everyone else go?

I think you usually self refer to your midwife. Phone your health centre and they will be able to tell you when to do this. 8-10 weeks in my area.

I went to see my doctor and all he did was refer me to the MW, and they saw me at 8 weeks. Maybe phone your surgery and ask them what their policy is.

I just had a telephone apt with Dr when I found out at about 5 weeks. Was just 5 mins where she asked a few questions e.g. whether it was planned, do I smoke/drink, am I generally healthy, etc. and also told me to take folic acid and then told me to make a mw apt at about 8 weeks.

Hi there,

I phoned my docs surgery feeling a bit daft and got the rather condescending receptionist telling me 'of course' I needed to make a doctors appointment. I made it for when I will be 8 weeks because it's half term and I'm a teacher so will be off work - snooty lady at docs seemed to think that was ok!

Thanks for all the replies.

I have made a MW appt for 8 weeks and have to go and collect an early pregnancy pack to arrange scans etc.

I thought this might be the case tbh as they always try and get patients to see Practice Nurse rather than GP where possible.

Happy to say the receptionist was very nice and more than happy to answer what seemed to me a strange question!
