Eight weeks and starting spotting

I am new to this board and this is my first pregnancy. It has taken us over a year to fall pregnant and I still can't quite believe it. We haven't told anyone yet as we want to be sure everything will be ok.

I've felt fine for the last few weeks, but yesterday I started to feel slight period pain. Today I've got a smallish deep red spot on my pants, and I'm very worried this could be a sign of an imminent miscarriage.

What do I do? Do I need to see the doctor or do I just rest and wait to see what happens? I'm very inexperienced in all this and very worried.

Many thanks

Rocky it could be implantation bleeding or the placenta settling in? Was the blood red or brown?
It could also be a small 'period' that arrives when your normal period would have been due. I bled for 6 days and still (fingers crossed) have a healthy pg at 22 wks
You could ask your GP to refer you to an EPU (early pregnancy unit) but to be honest most GPs will just tell you to rest and see what happens. If its a mc there is nothing they can do to stop it and although this seems harsh, it really is true. If the bleeding gets very heavy and painful get yourself down to A&E to get yourself checked out and some care.
Let us know what happens x

Rocky, call your GP and ask for a telephone consultation. They should refer you to the local EPU (they're at your local hospital) - or you can call them yourself and ask them whether you can come in without a GP referral as you have experienced bleeding/spotting. At the EPU they will discuss your experience and decide whether a scan will be helpful to check what is happening. It's better to take action if possible and get an answer than sit and worry.
Good luck, and fingers crossed everything is fine for you.

I agree with Jasmine51. I had the same thing, a sort of period echo, at 8 weeks with this pregnancy. I'm now 26 weeks along. But I lost my first at 9 weeks and know the worry of not knowing what's going on! All you can do is wait to see if it stops. It's an excuse to put your feet up for a bit! Sounds like it'll be fine. When I started my miscarrige, the blood was brown. It didn't turn red for another 48 hours. If that helps you. Good luck, my dear.

Rocky my GP sent me straight away to the EPU, but it might depend on where you are. Worth a try though, as a scann will give you the answers.
I spotted just before 8 weeks and then near 12 weeks again. Had an early scann at 8 weeks and they said I could bleed again near 12 weeks, and only to worry if it lasted more than a few days.
I know how horribly worrying it is, we also were ttc for a while and had already told my family so was feeling very silly indeed for having counted my chickens... now I am not yet counting them, but am 37+ weeks with a huge LO.
Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. I've been to the doctors this morning and I'm going for a scan on Thursday afternoon. The blood has started to get redder. I am very worried - first baby, I'm 34, it took us a year to conceive. My mind is running away with itself,.... this is a horrible time!

Didnt want to read and run. Ive got everything crossed for you, I hope little bub is ok [big hug]

jasmine51 · 08/02/2011 14:50

Keeping things crossed for you here. All is not lost so dont despair- as I mentioned before I had 6 days of bleeding and when bean showed a heartbeat on scan I had 2 days of progesterone things to stop the bleeding...all well now. It is a horrible time I know, hang in there and try and distract yourself for the next couple of days
xx

RockyB I hope you are OK, I too am 34 and took a year to get pregnant, (I did have a miscarriage last feb) I am now 13 weeks and the day before my NT scan I had a massive bleed and clot in the early hours of the morning - was convinced that it was all over espcially as I had also spotted early in the pregnancy7, then again 3 days later - so far my little bean is hanging in there - I am not counting my chickens but i found it helpful to hear positive stories when I was worrying.

Janoschi · 08/02/2011 15:39

Hope things settle down! Really feel for you. Let us know how it goes on Thursday - I'm rooting for you.

BoobyMcLeaky · 08/02/2011 15:43

Rocky I bled at five, eight and nine weeks when I was pregnant and was scanned each time. DD arrived safely at 37 weeks!
Good luck for Thursday, the waiting is the worst part Smile

Thanks everyone, your support means a lot. I find I'm going to the toilet every 5 minutes to check what's going on. It's so frustrating when you know there's nothing you can do but wait,....

Another one here - I had some bleeding at 7 weeks or so pg, and it was all fine! Good luck.
