Sleeping bags

I would like to use sleeping bags for DD1 when she arrives. Does anybody know how many I'll need? So far I've bought one 2.5 tog for 0-3 mths given she's due this month, then a lighter tog 3-6 mths for the Spring.

I'm assuming, however, that potentially leaky nappies may need I'll need more than one of each size etc?

As they're quite pricey (IMO) wanted to check in with some more experienced Mums before ordering more!

Many thanks

I think we've got two or three - must dig them out of the loft soon. I bought one new and I was given one, and bought another at an nct sale. So didn't spend too much on them. Have you looked for any second hand ones?

GrumpyFish · 03/02/2011 16:37

I would advise waiting to meet your baby and seeing what you likes before you buy any more (although maybe try to borrow an extra 0-3 month one?). I wanted to use in a sleeping bags with DS, but he really hated having his arms free and would only sleep swaddled, so the little ones just ended up being left in a drawer - total waste of money. He only really accepted sleeping bags at about 9 months.

I have just bought one 0-3 month bag from Mothercare and was thinking exactly the same thing. Don't want to buy more and then not use them. I think there's an NCT sale on near me this weekend so I might go to that and get another second hand one.

Now, sorry if this is a silly question, but if I have the baby in a moses basket with a sleeping bag is that everything I need for them to sleep with?

God, I am such a novice!

I've got 3 at mo - 2 new and one a friend gave me. But planning to buy another 2 in lightest tog - as we live abroad in hot country. But should be able to advise more in a week or so's time - depending on when my overdue son decides he can be bothered to appear! Hmm

And JoEW - i'd put a sheet on moses basket (or you cna just pop a pillow case on it) but that'll be all you need.

dd2 has just gone from swaddle to gro-bag at 3mo. dd1 was the same. so i wouldn't get too many little ones.
you can get them cheaply on ebay Smile.

gosh sorry I have just read my post back and it really does read like nonsense... trying to type and talk to toddler at the same time - hopefully you get the jist!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/02/2011 17:00

JoEW I used a pillow case over the mattress instead of a sheet too, that way you don't have to deal with the sheet moving.

If your LO takes to sleeping bags then you will probably need more but NCT sales and ebay are great.

Like the others have said though I'd wait and see. Both my DC loved theirs but my DN would only be swaddles for about 6 months.

I'd recommend bambino merino ones. They can be used from 3 months to 2 years and in summer or winter. They're pricey but save you having to buy hundreds of varieties!

I had two or three for DD. For each size I got two of the more expensive brands (mostly Grobag), then a third one from a supermarket just as a backup. Supermarket ones are much cheaper.

We found the Grobag one with holes in it for car seat harness useful if you are out and about at bed time. Seat clips fit through the holes so you can put them in sleepsuit and grobag before you get in the car and then (in theory) lift out the baby once you get home and put them straight into their cot.

DancingThroughLife · 03/02/2011 17:45

I had about three in 0-6 size. Have got two that DD alternates which are 6-18 months. She wears one while the other is in the wash, so she wears it for a few days. To be honest, it doesn't get that mucky as she's asleep and she's not once had an overnight nappy 'situation'.

I use the grobag ones too. I bought two from the website when there were a couple of different offers on so got them both for about £35 Shock I was astounded they let me mix 3 different offers, but hey ho, my win Grin Have got the travel ones too, they're very handy. In fact that's what she'll be sleeping in tonight.

I didn't use them while she was in the basket though, as she was a little bit cramped and she slept fine just with a sheet over her (she was a summer newborn).

AppleAndBlackberry · 03/02/2011 17:54

I have bought two 1.0 tog and two 2.5 tog in each size so far, but if I were you I would just buy 2.5 at this time of year and get the summer ones as and when you need them.

My DS was born in August and I had 3 bags (I originally had 2 but needed an extra as he pooed/vomited on them). I got size 0-6 months and he is still in them now.

They have them for £10 in Asda and they are on sale at £5.99 in Sainsbury's at the moment (can buy online). I think Matalan also sell them for about £8.

chocadoodle · 03/02/2011 18:00

Purflo are expensive but fantastic. They have sleeves that can be zipped on or off and have scratch mits attached to the smaller sizes. I wish I'd known about these when DS was smaller, I discovered them when he was about a year old, he's now 2 and still sleeps brilliantly with them. The best thing is they go up to aged 3 and don't seem to shrink in the wash either. I normally buy 2 of each tog rating for whatever size he's on.

SarahScot · 03/02/2011 18:47

I needed 6 as my DS was the pukiest baby in the world and regularly went through 3 a night!

They're great though, he was in Grobags until he was 2.
