Can a UTI be this painful?

Has anyone else had a UTI in pregnancy? I had one in December and was in absolute agony with it. Ended up on antibiotics and had to go to hospital in an ambulance when I collapsed. I think I have another one though, last night I was in severe pain in my back area on both sides and was violently sick. I feel abit better today but still have back pain on boths sides up the top - more like cramps. My question is can a UTI be this painful? I have an appointement with the docotor at 3pm so will say what he/she says but has anyone else experienced th

They can be very, very nasty. Sounds like your kidneys are infected now. Don't be surprised if you get sent in to hospital with it.

I had one when I was around 8 weeks pregnant, I've never had a UTI before. It was terrible, I was in awful pain, had strong flu like symptoms, could bearly move out of sheer exhaustion and just lay on the sofa for most of the day. Had a bought of anti-Bs which sorted it out.

Visitor is right, they can be very nasty.

How pregnant are you?

I'm so glad you are going to see your GP. I had a really bad uti at 34 weeks which I ignored and it caused ds2 to be born prematurely.

I agree with the others re the kidneys.

Good luck and I hope you feel much better soon.

thanks ladies sounds like it could be that. Do they just need a urine sample to diagnose it or does sample need to be sent off? I am keen to get it sorted asap.....

x posted fivefeet2, I am 32 weeks so similar to you. How did you manage to ignore it though? were you not in dreadful pain? what were your symptoms.

In my experience, they take a urine sample and can get basic diagnosis within about an hour and give you antibiotics that'll probably work. But then it takes 3 days to find out exactly what's causing it and then perhaps change antibiotics if necessary. I think once it's at fever stage though they like to give you IV antibiotics in hospital, especially if pregnant, I'd have thought. Hope you get better soon.

I thought it was just pregnancy discomfort on a grand scale.

Also, I was so miserable with sciatic pain and I thought it was all linked.

Ds1 was only 11 months old and a handful and I thought I was just having a rubbish pregnancy.

I even wet myself twice Blush

I didn't have the pain that you have though. Mine was a niggling discomfort.

Yes..although I have not had one during pregnancy, I have had a UTI before and it was AWFUL!

They can make you feel absolutely horrendousSad Cronic backache and aching down the sides of the rib-cage are very common symptoms. Make sure you drink tons of water and stay in bed!
