This is my third pregnancy, so obviously my body's hammered from the previous two and have been to the doctors tonight as was having pains, and my womb and cervix is extremely low, it doesn't seem to want to tuck back like it normally would. She said there's no way of knowing if your cervix is incompetent until I miscarry but I now have to stay horizontal until my womb is big enough to move out of my pelvis and can hold it's own!
I have a 3 and a 5 year old!!!
And how long will that be?????
And no exercise is not doing me any good!!

Has anyone ever had this? What have I got to expect?

Was it your GP you saw? It sounds like a prolapse not an incompetent cervix to me. I have a slight prolapse, which was worst between weeks 8 and 10 of my second pregnancy but had lifted out of the way by around week 12/13. How pregnant are you now?

Your GP is being silly IMO! If she thinks there's a problem with your cervix she needs to refer you to a specialist who can take steps to keep it closed. Have you been referred to the hospital/got a MW or consultant you can phone yet?

Ask for a referral to a specialist at a hospital if it wasn't one who you spoke to. It does sound like a prolapse to me, which is unrelated to incompetent cervix. They normally fix themselves in the early part of the second trimester (pretty much echoing what pushmepullyou said really!) You need to get a second opinion regardless.

And you can see if your cervix is incompetent or not before you miscarry - if they are that concerned you can go for regular cervical length checks. DC2 was saved by a routine scan that picked up my incompetent cervix at 18 weeks - I had no previous indications for it whatsoever. If there was a genuine concern after seeing a specialist, they would offer to scan you regularly, not just "wait until you miscarry". Well, unless you had a crap ob/gyn which isn't entirely impossible in my experience!

Good luck - I did four months of bedrest with a 22-26 month old last pregnancy so I know all about the inconvenience factor!

I'm 12 weeks.my whole womb and cervix is hanging very low (right by my opening) it's very painful but the outer of my cervix which isn't as important as the inner is soft and slightly open. I've just been told to talk to my midwife about it when I have my appointment next week. I've just had my 12 week scan and baby is fine! Just have to pretty much lie down as much as I can till baby grows big enough for my womb to support itself in my pelvis. But she also said that referring me to a specialist to check me would be wasting time! I always thought she was a good doctor!

My cervix was pretty low at 12 weeks and did lift by itself fairly shortly after. I don't think your GP has given you very good advice though. Is there anyone else at the practice that you can see? I would phone your midwife sooner than next week as week as well.

Coppernoddle · 01/02/2011 13:39

I've just phoned the midwife and she has managed to get me into see the specialist on the 15th feb but nothing sooner! But at least it's moving in the right direction! She was furious with how my doctor had dealt with it! So I just have to rest now, as much as I can lie down! Think I'm going to take up knitting!!! I'm already going mad due to being bed ridden already since Christmas due to hypremesis and low cortisol levels. Think this pregnancy is really going to test me! Especially as it wasn't planned and had no sessile for a third, but am actually looking forward to baby coming! Just got to get through the next few months!!

They can tell if your cervix is incompetent or not , how else would they know to put in a stitch or not.

I would just got to the mat ward as I think you have been given some rather odd advice!

I too am on my 3rd pregnancy , and it has been awful , if this was my first there wouldnt have been even a thought of a second or third child!!

so I feel your pain

rain1014 · 01/02/2011 14:20

ooooops just seen your last post as I was sending mine sorry - good luck with the MW

Coppernoddle · 01/02/2011 14:22

I had a rotten time in my first and second but didn't want my first to be an only child! Saying that, the girls are extremely exited about baby, took them to the scan and every morning they ask if it's coming today!, if only!!!!!
