morphine after a c section??

hi has any1 had experiance of morphine after a cs, as consultant has been explaining pain relief options after birth...im worried about being left in charge of a newborn whilst under the influence of that type of drug as im not sure what sort of side effects it has, i remember being in alot of pain after my last c section as i didnt take anything other then paracetemol an cocodimol because of this worry, but if there are no major effects then it may be something id consider, any advice welcome x

Think they just give you a very small amount to help with the pain. i don't remember feeling out of it but I do remember thinking 'Ooh, that's better'.

I had Morphine immediately post op, whilst in recovery. I remember 'loosing' a couple of hours, ie I don't really remember them, but Mum and OH were there with me to look after babe.

When I went to the ward, it had worn off anyway, (Mum and OH had to leave as it was middle of the night), and the midwives looked after babe for a few hours (which I hated incedently). I then coped on Paracetamol and Diclofenac. I'd defo recommend it immediately post op x

I had it and slept most of the day - mind you I had been awake for 24 hours at that point. Baby slept too. DH was there.

I had a morphine supposotory both times as it's direct pain relief.

After my EMCS I had a morphine drip, which made me throw up so they switched to tablets. I also had voltarol and paracetamol. I was quite drowsy for a while.

After my planned cs I just had the morphine ssuppository and then voltarol & paracetamol, the pain was far less than following my ECMS.

Just don't do too much in the first 24 hours. Get the midwives to change nappies and concentrate on feeding the baby and resting. I think being lazy helped my recovery from the planned CS, the less I did the less pain relief I needed.

They never answered the buzzer to give out pain relief, much less change nappies.

I had diamorphine during childbirth and the baby was pretty drowsy the first day.

It has little effect on me, tbh.

I've had it post op before it makes me stoned but that's about it - not drowsy.

Regular paracetamol & voltarol for a few days. Would avoid codeine (makes you constipated) and definitely don't take co-codamol as well as paracetamol because the co-drug has paracetamol in too.

They normally put morphine or diamorphine into the spinal. An occasional dose of morphine in the first 24h is often needed and shouldn't affect your ability to care for the baby but if it's something you are concerned about then tell the midwives.

I had a shot of morphine as the spinal block wore off. It did nothing at all, I think it doesn't for some women.

I took no painkillers after that as was very fortunate not to need them.

It might sound counterintuitive but it's better to get up as soon as you're able and move around a little. Aids healing much better than lying in bed. Only what you're ready for each time you move though.

Agree with expat about no point ringing the buzzer. I self cared for dd from birth. No beggar else was around.

suppository - meglet I thought they were the bees knees when I had a c section, I think that and paracetamol was all I had, but the suppository was the best. I didn't have morphine or drips or anything else

I had morphine for the first 24 hrs after my section. And abit more after that for severe and excruiciating wind pains, you could hear the bowel and like whistling noises, awful. I was on my own with DS (staff were dreadful and gave very little help) got no sleep (out of 4 babies on the ward, at least 1 would be crying at any one time) and still managed fine to watch DS and feed him etc. I was drowsy but still able to look after DS and not drop him or anything like that!

I had a morphine jab 36 hours after my ELCS (had not slept at all).

I was so tired I was tripping out, kept forgetting I'd had the baby all the time and nearly rang the bell to ask them to look after him as I was too off my head to do it.

And I had asked for a small dose

I only had Voltarol right after section. Was not offered anything else tbh.

Have had morphine lots of other times for admittance into hospital (other issues) and it only ever takes the edge off of the pain for me but has no effect on me mentally.

I had diamorhine i.v. and voltarol suppositories in theatre immediately post my elcs.

The only side effect I got was a flushed itchy face.

Did the trick as I had no pain and was up and walking the same evening.

The thing about any pain killer though is that you don't know how it will effect you when you have it for the first time. Take what your anaesthetist recommends and don't be shy in asking for more or a different "cocktail" if needed.

I'm allergic to Voltarol, so I opted for the oral liquid morphine, I think they called it oramorph. I only ever had small doses. It certainly helped with the pain, but I didn't feel out of it until the sleep deprevation started to really kick in a few days later! :)

I had it with youngest DS but didn't have any side effects other than itchy nose. Drove me mad but I was still all there :)
