Early testing: reliable or not at all?

It is my birthday today. Period due Monday. Took 4 day early superdrug test today-with FMU: came up negative. Can I trust it and drink tonight? Or is there a slim ( very much wanted ) chance that I am pregnant? I hope you wonderful ladies can share your thoughts and experiences. No symptoms of AF or pregnancy at the mo. TIA x

There is always a possiblity until your AF comes or is late ime.
The advice is if you are trying then limit your alcohol intake or cut it out altogether. I'll be honest I tried for 4 years with DD and over 2 with DS and yes I cut down but I didn't stop altogether till I got a BFP.
If you can limit yourself to one or two drinks then I don't see a problem, but if you are going to get hammered then I personally wouldn't.
Good luck for no AF coming on monday.

Thank you hunnie! So sorry for earlier blunders. New to mumsnet: learning the ropes. Might change my name to mumsnutter! thanks for your kind wishes. x

Not to worry, it will get easier to use here.

There is a trying to conceive forum which is also very good keeps you sane and stops you testing (well that is theory).

Hope all goes well for you.

Happy Birthday and have a lovely night.

If it helps, the furthest you'd be is two weeks and plenty of women drink at that stage unknowingly pregnant. It's unlikely to do harm before two weeks as the embryo hasn't implanted in all probability. That said, it's quite possible to have a fun night without getting hammered :)
I was unknowingly pregnant on my wedding day one month ago - but luckily was such a full day I only managed about 2 drinks anyway!

Happy Birthday :)

mine never showed up at all until the day my period was due, when i got a feint line, so i would say they can be unreliable when you do them early. i had 10miu tests so should have picked it up really?

happy bday! and hope you get the result you want when you test again

Wishinandahopin · 28/01/2011 12:30

Thanks misty and firawla! Thanks to all you great girls, am starting to feel hopeful again- although having said that there are no symptoms AT ALL of AF or otherwise?

As has already been mentioned if you are pregnant, the baby isn't properly tapped into your blood supply yet so, in theory, drinking shouldn't affect it. That said, even if I was a big drinker (I'm not) and even if it was my birthday, if there was a chance I was pregnant no way would I be going out and getting smashed. Enough drinks to be merry, sure, but not falling about slurring/puking (and I'm not making ANY assumptions here! I'm not suggesting that's what you have planned! Just sayin', I wouldn't, yknow?)

As for the negative test at this point, again as already has been said, there is still a chance of it turning positive. With my first son I didn't get a positive until the day my period was due. With my second, not until the day after my period was due (what was with the most sensitive tests and they were absolutely negative a few days before). Some women, it's even later due to either slow rising hormone or the fact they ovulated later in their cycle than usual.

Oh, and whilst I 'just knew' I was pregnant with my first three kids, this little sucker took me by surprise - not a single symptom to make me think 'aha! I'm all up the duff again!'. So don't worry that you don't 'feel' pregnant either!

Finally, good luck with getting pregnant and have a great birthday! Just like all the adverts on tv for alcohol say these days: (given you might be pregnant) Enjoy Alcohol Responsibly Grin Grin

MandaHugNKiss · 28/01/2011 14:18

what was with? For shame. My grammar really isn't that bad. That was with the most sensitive test...

Wishinandahopin · 28/01/2011 16:03

Manda: thanks for the reassurance and the much needed sensible advice! It's my 40th. Massive bash planned! No dc yet. Been chasing career dreams. Been ttc for a year now with no luck so far. Fertility tests for both of us came fine. Not as strong or as motivated as some folk to go down the medical intervention route. This is it for us: au naturel! If it happens then good; if not then so be it! Lots of lovely family, friends and each other enough for us... But I would be ecstatic if it happened. That would be the best birthday present ever!
