scan says I'm 4 weeks I think I should be 6

After light spotting and some cramps I've had a scan today. Moody sonographer told me I was only 4 weeks - I got BFP two weeks ago so I don'ty see how that makes sense. I queried what that meant in light of the fact my dates say I should be 6 weeks. She seemed to take that as a personal attack on her ability to do her job and said "it's easy to get your dates muddled!" I have all my AFs since June on the calendar and I have a 24 day cycle exactly. No mistake, last AF was 18 December.

I had flu the week that I think I was 4 weeks so I'm wondering if that had an affect and baby hasn't grown etc.

I go back on Monday for more blood tests, but am not feeling very positive. Should I be fearing the worse?

I know its easy to say but try not to worry. We went for a scan when I was 7+2 for my dates and i was pretty sure I knew when I'd ovulated, but I was only 5+6, When I then went back for my 12 week scan (which was booked for 11 weeks) the baby measured 10+3 so had caught up somewhat - I think they just grow at different rates to what the "average" is - did you see a HB, fetal pole, sac etc - did they have to do an internal?

PrincessScrumpy · 27/01/2011 17:37

They only did the tummy one (sorry, don't know technical term) and could only see gestational sac and nothing else. They are checking hgc levels today and then on Monday.

The bloods will tell you for sure, if they are increasing (I think doubling every 48/60 hours) then you're pg if not then its not a good sign.

In terms of dates though unless you're charting/using OPKs you may have ovulated a week later than you thought which would make you less pregnant than you think you are.

Hope you get good news, I've been in your position and know how tough it is xx

ShowOfHands · 27/01/2011 17:48

An abdominal scan befor 6 weeks will often be inconclusive.

Please try not to worry too much. The bloods will give a more accurate picture.

jellyhead188 · 27/01/2011 17:54

Yeah sorry I meant to say that too - remember your talking about something which is only a matter of mm big so any slight variation in the measurement would change dates by quite a lot - and as ShowofHands says at that stage an internal would have shown far more detail!

Coppernoddle · 27/01/2011 18:39

She wouldn't see much at 4 weeks as the day of your last period, ovulation (2weeks) then inplantation waiting for next period (2weeksish!) so she would see nothing surely!! Unless she did see and she meant 4 weeks as the implanted embryo +2 =6! I went for a scan at 6 weeks and she said to me, the good sign is is that there is evidence of a pregnancy, she found very little, then had a 12 week scan yesterday thinking I was 11 +2 and was actually 12 weeks which doesn't make sense but heyho! Don't go off your scan tomorrow, wait till your 12 week it will be more imformative and not everyone's baby grows at exactly the same rate! Were all different as with every pregnancy! Good luck x x let us know how it goes x x

PrincessScrumpy · 27/01/2011 18:43

Hormone level is 5,531 but won't know if pg is continuing until they compare Monday's results.

Thanks. Feeling a bit more positive.

Sorry, pregnancy brain, you had your scan! Der! Still, even if you were sick, baby is not living of placenta at this early stage, it's just surviving off the hormones your cyst releases up until about 12 - 14 weeks where it changes over to placenta, which gives you plenty of time to be a sick as you like, loose weight, look discusting, and damn right miserable before baby needs what you eat!! Don't panic honey! Go by your dates!

PrincessScrumpy · 27/01/2011 18:49

Hormone level matches the dates I think rather than scan.

But don't forget everybody's bodies progress at slightly different rates. My friend who's a midwife said to me yesterday due to them changing the dates on my 12 scan, go by your dates rather than the scan dates if you know your cycle as they will be more accurate than the scans. Mine was only 4 days difference but made a big difference to me as I was due 15th august and was worried if I went over to be induced then I would run the risk of being too close to September (school year) but have now put it to the 11th which I'm happy, even if I do go over which I'm not fussed, went over with both my previous pregnancies, at least I'm not going into September! Couldn't handle waiting another year before they start school!!!

PrincessScrumpy · 27/01/2011 19:03

If pg is okay, it'll be a September baby but I'll be having a cs so I hope they get the dates right otherwise I could go into labour before they do the cs. Won't worry though, just be happy if I get that far!

DD1 was 2 days early and tried to come at 32 weeks. They gave me drugs to slow it down so they could get the steroids in me and everything stopped. I even went back to work. DD saved her drama until the end of the pg, this one has started with the drama!

At least they keep it interesting for us! They don't like to think we'll have a walk in the park do they!! I'm having a propper grumpy week this week and hate pregnancy like you wouldn't believe!! Can't wait till babies! Bet they'll watch you closely then this time in case the same thing happens! Then again every pregnancies different so hopefully this will be the end of your troubles in this one x

I thought having the scan would be reassuring but it seems to have worried me more.

Hi, I had Approx 5 early pregnancy scans all dating all over the place. Really worried me, especially as it was accompanied by spotting/bleeding until I was about 8 or 9 weeks.
I think one was over 1 1/2 weeks off my dates. When I got to twelve weeks I had a private scan and the wonderful radiographer told me that placing the markers even 1/2 mm off can change the date by a week. She also said before 12 week scan it is very hard to accurately date baby.
Btw I am now 31 weeks and dating exactly as I thought I should.
Try not to worry.

Bugger, sorry iPhone malfunction!

OrangeGloss · 28/01/2011 06:53

Princessscrumpy I hope the second blood test on Monday gives you some reassurance, in the meantime I'd like to add my story to try and help

1st scan I measured 5 weeks and could only see the sac, and I should have been 7+2 by LMP. 2nd scan 12 days later I saw heartbeat and measured 7+5-8+1 depending on where they measured, so they said everything was ok and I'd caught up some too.
I have a 35 day cycle, and could have implanted late which could be a reason for you too (don't remember seeing your CL).
Easier said than done but try not to google x

CharlieBoo · 28/01/2011 09:13

Can only echo that of other posters. I too had cramping and light spotting very early doors in my last pg. I was referred for an early scan and it showed only a sac, no yolk sac... I was devastated. They did bloods and I had to go back and have them repeated in a couple of days... They had increased but had not doubled. The following week I went for a scan and there was my baby.. Heart pumping away. Try not to panic it's just early on and the foetus develops at such different rates.. Good luck

PrincessScrumpy · 30/01/2011 22:43

Thank you everyone.

BTW I have a very rigid 24 day cycle. Fingers crossed. Not so much cramping - more occasionally niggles this weekend, but that may just be because I'm really aware of it right now. Can't wait for this time tomorrow so I will have some answers.

Lots of cramping is normal in a healthy pregnancy, so try not to worry about that.

I had an early scan at 5 + 4 and they put me at 4+4. I was worried as I'd got my BFP on my CD 21, so had actually expected I'd ovulated early and would be told I was a week ahead. My 14 week scan did show baby measuring a week ahead, so now I am waiting for my 20 week scan to see if they're going to change my dates.

Early scans, if very early, can cause extra worry I think.
