Ovarian Cyst in pregnancy.....

I have a cyst, its been there a yr. I'm currently off work due to pain from it. It is a fluid filled 'simple cyst' but gynae are a bit concerned as its been there a year and cysts don't usually last that long. Its being scanned regularly and there was talk of removing during pregnancy but this won't happen unless absolutely necessary, that would be if it changes or twists. It is only 3cm so not massive, but painful.
Was wondering if anyone else has had similar ?? It does worry me, especially if they wanted to remove while i'm pg :(.

Hiya, similar to you, I also have a 'simple cyst' but it's pretty big, and is still growing according to the latest scan. It was picked up on an early scan as I had pain and bleeding. My obstetric team are very reluctant to remove it (unless it ruptured or twisted ovary) whilst pregnant despite that it was quite painful at times. Pain settled down at about 17 weeks. All I think now is I look bigger than I should at 22 weeks as the cyst contributes to the bump. After baby is born, they plan to rescan and if it is still there then they may decide excision is the best option. I know I am not that helpful but at least you know you are not alone [bsmile]

Forgot to say i'm currently 19 weeks.
Interesting Rebus, i certainly don't want it removed, but the pain is draining :(
I've asked for a section so it could be removed at same time, but they're reluctant to do so, i'm just fed up with it after this long and want it gone asap so i thought a section was a good idea :)

What a good idea about the csection! It didn't even cross my mind to think about that. I thought they might be able to do long needle aspiration but obs said it would just as likely grow again in my case (it is 8cm currently).

I know that everytime I felt a twinge I immediately worried that it was caused by a problem with the baby. The odd twinge still happens I guess but you get used to it don't you?

I had this during my last pregnancy.

I was really worried - but they told me that cysts appear and grow fast in pregnancy because of the extra oestrogen.

The cyst did cause me enormous pain at about 8 months - but only for a few days - when I was visiting primary schools for work and sitting on very low down small chairs.

After the pregnancy it slowly dissolved and finally disappeared on its own.

I had a large one (forgotten size now though) in my first pregnancy, it was monitored and didn't grow. I was scanned post natal and it had gone was told it probably burst in labour.

I had an ovarian cyst removed at 20wks pregnancy with dc3. It was 10x9cm and was diagnosed at my 12 week scan. It had been planned not to do anything and watch and wait but I suddenly developed very severe pain.

I was admitted to hospital and told that they weren't sure if the pain was the cyst that had twisted or appendicitus and I was in theatre within 4 hrs of admission having been told that I had "a good chance of losing" my baby. It was all very scary and post-op the pain continued, leading to 9 days in hospital on a morphine infusion. Although the cyst had been removed it turned out that the pain was from kidney stones.

The scar oozed a lot post-operatively and it turned out that I had a 9cm deep cavity in the wound that needed daily dressings from district nurses for the 11 weeks it took to heal. All in all a horrible experience.

There is evidence that removing the cyst at 16-20wks is the least risky especially if it is planned rather than emergency surgery.

By the way all was well with the rest of the pregnancy and I now have a 10wk old dd. I hope all goes well for you and you manage to control the pain.

I've been reading this as my cyst is 6.5x5.4x4.3 at my last scan at 7w4, it had grown in 10 days.

I'm being re scanned in 2 weeks when il be 13w to see if it's grown and to decide where to go from there.

I had a cyst which was 6cm at its largest. It caused me so much pain in early pregnancy that I thought I was having an ectopic but on the early scans they found the cyst. I had scans at 6 and 8 weeks and it was growing then but they said they wouldn't consider removing it at that size. At the time I really wanted something done because although the pain wasn't constant it would just come on suddenly, sharp, stabbing really severe. I was doubled over, couldn't walk, felt sick.
But they said it would probably start to shrink around 12 weeks as the placenta takes over from the corpus luteum and lo and behold at my 12 week scan it had shrunk a bit and I haven't had any pain since about 10 wks (19wks now).

I'm 11w now and I know it's there, it's about an inch or two higher than it was 4 weeks ago.

I can sympathise with the odd sickly pain it gives you. I feel Better knowing yours shrunk :)
