What is this pain?

I'm almost 16 weeks and on and off have been getting pains in my lower back (on the right side) which normally come on after a bout of lifting/housework but then pass if I rest up.

But a couple of times in the last fornight my thighs/buttocks and lower back on the right hand side have gone into a sort of spasm and it is so painful I can barely move. I just fell over in the kitchen and it seems to have brought it on. Has anyone else experienced this?

sounds a bit like sciatica, it often affects one side of your back and the pain travels down your buttock/leg, its extremely painful at times, and pregnancy can exacerbate it as puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. when I have it it feels like having really bad period pain in my back, bottom and all down my leg, - if it continues might be worth seeing an osteopath and if your foot goes tingly/numb you should go to A&E (thats what I was told anyway!) xx

Thanks so much for the reply, I am seeing my midwife next week so I'll mention it then but was hoping someone might be able to enlighten me in the mean time.
