Hi I have had a surprise pg, so I have not taken any folic acid, My DC1 was a accident and as I was young I had no clue about anything I saw a mw at 5 weeks and she said it was to late that you needed a build up before you got pg and needed it during the first two weeks, but as you need it till 12 weeks is that right.

Is it to late or should I start taking them?

Start taking them. Crap advice from the midwife.

Yup, crap advice - never too late, start taking them now.

My background...after mcs I was advised that I have a blood disorder and have no ability to store folates so despite me taking my pg vits for months I had virtually no folate score. I was told this once I was already 5 wks pg and the consultant marched me out of the office and straight to the pharmacy to get some folic acid (high dose for me). Long story cut short = I am 20 wks with healthy looking bub...it is not too late at 5 wks to start!

definitely take them. won't hurt. also, eat plenty of folate rich foods, such as spinach, broccolli, asparagus, avocado, cashew nuts, etc. my consultant advised me to keep taking folate throughout pregnancy.
