Put on about 17lb in 20 weeks - too much?

Title says it all really. I have put on over a stone so far and am 20 weeks pregnant today. In my defense I have been pretty much immobile since I found out I was pregnant (have a high risk preg and at risk of cervical incompetency) and I also had IVF so blaming the hormones for some of the weight.

I know 2 stone is meant to be normal, but worrying I will go over. Am I just being daft?

I think 2 stone is just an average, so some people will put on more and some less. I suspect that I'd put on 1.5 stone by 20 weeks with DS (gained over 3 stone in total), although was right at the bottom of healthy BMI range to start with. Am 26 weeks with DC2 and have put on a stone so far, but from a starting weight that was higher. Just eat healthily, don't overeat or pig out on sugary stuff, and your body will do what it needs to in terms of weight gain Smile.

I'm due on Sunday and have put on nearly 3 stone. Not sure why I weighed myself, think I was curious because this pregnancy has been different to my 1st. (I put on 2st 2lbs with DD.)

Agree with GrumpyFish about healthy eating.

It could be excess fluid - well, that's what I'm telling myself!

Take care of yourself & don't worry about it.

Completely normal, I think! Remember that every pregnancy is different, don't pay too much attention to how much you are/arent't supposed to gain. Just like the others said, as long as you eat healthily, it'll be fine.

If it's any consolation, I had put on almost a stone by week 12! Eating was the only thing that helped the nausea... The weight gain has slowed down since then, fortunately, but I still expect to be around 2-3 stone heavier by the end.

I put on a stone in the first 8 weeks then another stone and a half by 7 months but only half a stone in the last 2 months. I couldn't seem to stop eating the whole time I was pregnant!!
I wouldn't worry about putting on weight, I lost a stone through giving birth then it only took me 12 weeks to lose the rest just through walking and my massive pregnancy appetite going back to normal.

i agree with everyone i found eating was the only thing that helped the sickness and it was sweet stuff and bread that didnt make me feel sick with the smell so i put on 2.5 stone im trying to be more healthy this time but its easier this time because im not so sick, i already have an unhealthy bmi so i dont want to put more weight on x

Thanks ladies. I don't care for me really, I appreciate the your body changes etc, I just want to make sure I am doing what's recommended in terms of what's best for the baby.

I will try not to worry too much, and make sure I don't overdo the cheese and crackers (my current craving!) Grin

laylasmummy09 - thank you for making me feel SO much better. All I crave is bread - especially bagels with LOTS of cream cheese. Although any type of bread / toast / crackers / sweet breads seems to do the trick. I didn't eat much bread before being pregnant and now it is all I think about. Try to keep telling myself it is 'what my body needs' but am not sure if the rationale is the right one! Wish I craved apples or something similar :)

Please don't worry. I put on 4 stone with my first, three and half with my second (both boys) and one and a half stone so far with my third (and 23 weeks)... Hard work by the end, but lost it all fairly quickly and no concerns all the way through both pregnancies from midwives. Boys both fine! Think it depends a bit on your size/shape to begin with, I guess I am fairly little usually, so needed to out on more. Have to say my main craving with all three has been for crisps and dip, and choc- probably accounts for at least a stone each!

It depends on your intial BMI (just check the charts on the internet to see what it was and how much you should be gaining). Don't worry too much, but do try to watch what you eat going forward. The baby will be fine, but losing weight afterwards is not going to be easy, so you don't want to overdo it. I am 24 weeks and put on 5kg (12 pounds), all of it gained during the 2nd trimester, and am worried that it is piling up too quickly...
