Bit confused about how many weeks pregnant

I am more than likely going to sound incredibly thick here but I need someone to explain!

TTC at the minute and in the two week wait before testing. I have bought a couple of tests already and when I was reading the information it says that the test counts weeks from conception whereas the doctor would count weeks from the fist day of the last period. I understand this so far!

Question.....I know its advisable for people to wait until they reach 12 weeks before telling others they are pregnant but does this mean 12 weeks worked out from the conception date or from the first date of the last period?

May be ages before I have to think about this for real but just wanted to know :)

I waited til the day I had my 12 week scan (actually 12+4) as thats when I had proof of how far along I was (although it tallied exactly with my LMP date anyway).

Oops, just realised that's not a link any more and I'm not sure how to make it one, but you can find the thread by logging in and putting that in the search box!

I'd add that the 12 weeks thing is partly risk of miscarriage (which does decline considerably after about 8 weeks I think) but also in case the 12 week scan picks up any anomalies you'd prefer not to tell the whole world about; so I'm attempting to keep quiet to all but close friends before mine next Mon.
