Carry cot - ok to use instead of moses basket?

I've just bought a new Quinny Dreami carry cot. Some people say you can use it instead of a moses basket for the first few weeks, others not. I'm totally confused and not sure if I need to get a moses basket too! Does anyone know?

I think that this depends on the carry cot. Apparently, some are OK to use instead of a moses basket, others aren't - something to do with the airflow...

It's probably best to find out from the manufacturer what they recommend, or if you have a good pram/pushchair shop, they should be able to help.

I asked this in Mamas and Papas yesterday. The store manager said that it's fine to use the cot but important to buy a sprung rather than foam mattress for it. Apparently they sell them to custom sizes but Mothercare do too and other places I'm sure so you could shop aroujnd.

Unless you're going away, I personally think you should distinguish between day and nightime sleeping areas. Hmm, not explaining this very well as i know babies sleep in the moses basket during the day, but a pram at night for a number of weeks seems a bit odd to me.

I used a carrycot all the time, never a moses basket as my babies were all quite large and I felt a carrycot was too flimsy.

You don't need a moses basket unless you want one

We used the carry cot from our buggy. I didn't see the point in spending extra money on a moses basket when we already had the carry cot. May be best to replace the mattress, but this depends what the current one is like. Our DC only used it for just over a month and then we put them into the cot. So I was pleased we didn't waste the money. The idea of leaving baby asleep in the buggy in the hallway or something may seem odd, but if you take the carrycot off the buggy and they're in the bedroom - I don't really see how this is odd how is it different to a basket? I really don't think a 4,5 or 6 week old baby can distinguish between the two.

The baby won't know the difference between the carry cot and a moses basket. I wouldn't have bothered with a moses basket had we not been offered a lovely second hand one.

You just need the correct mattress. They can be useful if your baby needs motion to get to sleep.

However, I bought a Jane Capazo Pro carrycot instead of a moses basket for DS and it was awful. The fabric that covered it was the noisiest, most rustly nylon you can imagine. Of course you don't notice details like that until you're trying to gently lower a sleeping baby into the thing and sneak away.

And DS would fling his arms out and rustle his little hands against the fabric, even draping a towel over the sides didn't help.

My DD slept in the carrycot from the Quinny when we stayed for a few day at my parents several times. They bought a different mattress. Like other poster have said, I doubt a tiny baby is going to notice!

We are thinking of using our carrycot (part of the Graco Quattro Tour Deluxe travel system) - have emailed Graco to see about special mattresses.

Anyway, my question is, can you buy stands specifically for the carrycot? I don't really like the idea of the baby being on the floor, would rather it were raised up. Can you just use a moses basket stand? Sorry if this is a stupid question, first time so completely new to all this!

LF - did the carrycot fit the moses basket stand OK? I just worry it will fall off...

We have bought a Mamas and Papas Glide pram as well as one of their moses basket stands to fit the carrycot in - we haven't got it yet, baby due in 7 weeks, but the shop assistant assured us it would fit fine.

Maybe email Graco and see if they can tell you which moses basket stands would fit the carrycot? Also, not all carrycots are suitable for overnight sleeping, only the ones where a proper ventilated mattress is available to fit it, you will have to buy that specially.

Thanks JeelyPiece. I've emailed Graco and they said they carrycot isn't suitable for overnight as the sides aren't rigid. Which makes perfect sense now that it has been pointed out to me...
