High HCG levels - should I be concerned?

I've just got my results back from a blood test at what I think was 24 dpo (5+3 or 5+6 by LMP, though I have long cycles so ov on around day 18). They measured 24041 iu/L (not mui/mL which I think is the usual unit of measurement on here and on google - not sure how the two equate!).

Can anyone give me any idea if this is good? My doc (who admitted he'd looked on google himself Hmm) said he thought it was good/possibly a bit high. But without any offence to my doc (who tells their patients they googled their test results to see if they were normal?!?! Shock) I'd like some other opinions!

Thanks for your help! Grin

Have you seen www.betabase.info/ ?

galwaygal · 18/01/2011 19:34

If you look at the betabase information, then you should be worried about triplets rather than twins!!!!! Grin. OK you are on the upper end of the singleton range but still within the range reported.

Just so you know iu/L is the same as mui/mL. So you can look at the figures in the normal way.

Anyway, congratulations on your pregnancy.

emma31177 · 18/01/2011 19:36

may be more than twins after looking at that site let us no how it goes xx

Sparklies · 18/01/2011 20:18

For what it's worth, with all my pregnancies I have been above average for triplets - and there has only ever been one in there! There's a wide variation of "normal"! I was always disappointed too as I wanted twins!

Wombat33 · 18/01/2011 20:28

Thanks all! I'll let you know how I get on. Just as long as it's not molar or something like that!

OP posts:
Sparklies · 19/01/2011 00:21

If it was molar it would be a LOT higher at this point. I think you're safe :)

TheEvilDead2 · 19/01/2011 01:54

You blatantly have 3 in there Grin

congratulations and good luck!

Wombat33 · 19/01/2011 08:47

Grin at three! I will eat my hat if that's the case!

sparklies did anyone ever mention chromosomal abnormalities to you with your high levels? Dr Google is scaring me with mentions of downs and such like being a cause of high hcg at this stage.

Hi all - I got my second blood test results tooday, taken a week after the first lot, they've increased to 68,911 iu/L, which I think is about right... Have a private viability scan book for Thursday so we'll find out then (am terrified!!!)! Grin

Back from my scan - it's good news!! Bean was there (only the one mind!), measuring 7+3 (1.3cm) and with a heartrate of 160 bpm. I was so shocked as I was fearing the worst after my previous MC but I'm so relieved!! Grin Grin Grin It is of course still early days, but for the moment all is good! Grin Thanks for your support everyone.

Wonderful news!! So glad it all looks good - with those numbers I am not that surprised!

Sorry - I missed your reply earlier. Yes, I have actually screened positive for Down syndrome at my NT scan with 1 in 34, partly thanks to the raised bHCG. But because it is normal for me I am not as worried as I would otherwise be, as my other two children have typical chromosomes.

Not everyone with high bHCG will screen positive though - mine was also because the other hormone they screen for was crazy, crazy low, unrelated to the bHCG. If that other hormone had been normal, I wouldn't have screened positive, and the same goes for the bHCG. It's because they both are abnormal in my case. So no reason to think you would!

Wombat33 · 27/01/2011 16:56

Thaks Sparklies. I'm still grinning like an idiot as you can imagine and can't quite believe it!

Good luck with the rest of your pg. Sounds like it's all quite normal for you so I'm hopefull that everything will be just fine. Let me know how you get on x
