are foam cot mattresses any good?

MIL has just brought us one for £40 and I read conflicting things about how supportive etc they are. I'm probably wrong but I always think of them as being a bit cheap and nasty (apologies - not trying to offend anyone - ready to be proved wrong).

Any advice/comments on if a £40 foam cot mattress is likely to be of decent quality and very supportive (I'm a bit obsessed about wanting a firm spportive mattress for LO)?

We had one for our dd when she was born. it was slightly more expensive than yours at £55 but was foam and was fine for the first 8-9 months.

I felt it wasn't as supportive after that as she was much heavier and ended up buying a spring one.

I did a bit of digging yesterday evening while waiting for a meeting to start and found a couple of really old threads (can't be bothered to find them again) with lots of people who were perfectly happy with them for at least the first 6 months. And actually liked that if they were totally minging with vom & wee etc. they weren't too annoyed/strapped for cash if they had to replace them. Then most people said get a sprung one later one.

So if you do that, you get to be diplomatic to MIL and use it while the littl'un is tiny, and then replace it a few months down the line with a sprung one.

good guess d . I can see why having one for the first few months would be good for some before investing in a sprung one, but, tbh, I'd rather just have a decent one from the outset and cover it with a waterproof sheet or sth to protect it than have a cheap one then a sprung one - seems like a waste. DH thinks I'm being fussy and if the shop told her it was OK then it should be fine

We went for an expensive one as we were given a lovely silver cross mahogany cot which was extra large but not a cotbed so only fitted one mattress from John Lewis. I was really happy with it, but would have considered a foam one if it was an option.

They're handy when child goes into a bed - I put it sticking out under the bed so when dd fell out she didn't get hurt. She's only fallen out twice and both times I've found her asleep on the floor mattress!
