I know MW's always say you can... And I know that you ovulate before your first period, so technically you can... BUT, as I understood it if baby is less than 6 months old and youre EBF'ing then your protected as your body doesn't produce the hormone that triggers ovulation. DH and I have been relying on that but a friend told me today that I'm more fertile and can totally get PG again... Which with 10 wk old is far from ideal!
Anyone know which is right?

Yes, you can get pregnant while EBF. There'll be a load of mums with experience of this along in a moment to tell you so. I'd advise contraception!

Oh, and respect for even considering having sex 10 weeks after giving birth Grin

SlightlyTubbyHali · 12/01/2011 21:07

The MWs are right.

When I was breastfeeding both times my period came back at 14 weeks, so I probably ovulated at about week 12.

You're not more fertile, and your chances of pregnancy are probably quite slim, but BF is really not a suitable method of contraception if you really want to avoid pregnancy.

you are not protected 100%. it;s a very effective form of contraception and the vast majority of women WON'T get pregnant.

but it is possible. you could reduce the risk by not having sex around the time you would be ovulating.

but personally i would use condoms just to be on the safe side

Oh yes you can. Be careful if it's not what you want.

You definitely can and very likely will if you have regular sex and don;t use protection.

ShowOfHands · 12/01/2011 21:11

I was EBFing. DD was still feeding every 2hrs at least, day and night. At 11wks I said to dh, I'm sure I'm ovulating you know. He laughed. Two weeks later, my period. Regular 28 day cycle from that day onward.

So no it didn't stop me ovulating at all.

Oh my goodness! I don't normally fall into the naive and stupid catergory.... I clearly do on this subject!
Thank you ladies
