Why when I "crave" something........

........ is it always something unhealthy! Recently it's been Jaffa Cakes, maltesers, anything that's not good. The only thing that's been a constant healthy boost is oranges, clementines and loads of orange juice but this morning for some reason I absolutely have to have meringues! Quite possibly broken up over some haagen daz. :o

I used to crave celery and salad in my first pregnancy - not sure if it was a true craving, ot whether I felt so bad it was the only thing I fancied eating!
In my second I craved cake and chocolate :( DD is 16 months now and that craving's still not totally gone

autumnberry · 08/01/2011 13:15

I am battling a Ben and Jerry's craving this morning. Quite fancied it for breakfast Shock I will not give in Wink

moomaa · 08/01/2011 13:20

I really do think if you crave it then your body needs it for some reason. I wanted lots of unhealthy things when pregnant and as soon as baby was out it was like I'd had an appetite reset.

I wanted lots of liquorice and then someone told me that it has some vitamin or something in that dairy has in it and I don't eat a lot of dairy.

I put on lots of weight with both my pregnancies but baby gradually 'drank' it off me so it didn't take me any longer to get to pre-pregnancy weight than my friends. I'm hoping this is going to happen this time too as DD is 3 weeks and I have 2 stone for her to shift off me!!

coastgirl · 08/01/2011 13:47

I only want white processed carbs; crumpets, crackers, doughnuts, chips, pasta...mmm, so good!

I honestly do not understand how all my pregnancy books etc say "You will be feeling hungry" (so true) but the NHS advice is no extra calories until the 3rd trimester? I don't usually eat much so surely to goodness I'm hungry for a reason? How on earth can I not eat more? It just makes you feel guilty about being hungry.

I craved lime green metallic cars. I had wanted to lick them.

superchick · 08/01/2011 17:04

I NEVER eat fast fast food but since I've been pregnant I have craved burger kings. I literally inhale them.

DancingThroughLife · 08/01/2011 17:12

At the end of my pregancy, I couldn't eat enough Jubbly ice lollies. The last two weeks I was on ML and I had to forcefully restrain myself from eating a whole box of them in a day. It was hard work.

Before that, it was roast potatoes and crisps. Specifically pickled onion monster munch Hmm

Crystylline · 08/01/2011 17:16

craved yoghurt and fruit juice all pregnancy - on the good food side!

on the bad food side - craved chocolate all the way though, even though i'd normally prefer crisps for a junk snack.

oh and beetroot... can never get enough beetroot!

Toni2011 · 08/01/2011 17:26

I have craved hoola hoops and coca cola for the last few weeks.

I think my baby likes bananas (which is a shame as I really don't). He doesn't like fresh orange juice though - I haven't been able to drink that since my first trimester.

This week the favourite food is curry. Or chilli - anything nice and hot really. Again, this is odd as I don't like spicy food at all.

Nelly09 · 08/01/2011 17:36

I am fed up craving ridiculous things... It's driving me crazy. Totally irrational, well I guess mabe my body needs it but still. With dd1 I didn't have this and I always thought women exaggerated it but now I know it is all true.

A tuna baguette from pret was my main focus of the day today, I had to have one or I thought I'd die. If I don't get what I am craving the nausea is just unbearable.

HEre's hoping it all stops in a couple of weeks when I enter the 2nd trimester............

Sparklies · 08/01/2011 19:22

Curry is good, or should I say, it makes a good accompaniment to a plate of lime pickle Grin

cocoachannel · 08/01/2011 20:05

Sparklies- a girl after my own heart on the lime pickle. Apart from the fact that pregnancy has nothing to do with it for me...!

DancingThroughLife · 08/01/2011 20:27

cocoa, love the name. The only other time I've seen it written, it was a typo Hmm Still not sure how they managed that.

cocoachannel · 08/01/2011 21:41

Thanks Dancing; I do occasionally wonder whether people think that I've just got it wrong..!

LisMcA · 08/01/2011 22:16

cheap strawberry ice cream and pickled onion monster munch here!! Not together though ...... hmmmmmHmm

PipPipPip · 09/01/2011 01:20

Coca Cola, rotisserie chicken (like you get at a supermarket), Crunchie bars and milk.

Plus enormous quantities of any other food!

belle29 · 09/01/2011 10:39

Nelly09 That's exactly the same as me! Can't face the thought of any food because of the nausea and then suddenly get the one food I can face eating. So far has been honey nut loops, Wagamama's soba noodles, Soreen (which I haven't eaten since I was about 8!), marmite to name but a few. Although I find if I don't eat it within about twenty minutes of thinking of it then I go back to all food repulsion!

belle29 · 09/01/2011 10:48

Ooh and also Mint Choc Chip ice cream and the other night I did think about how good a Vienetta would be! And this morning I was wondering whatever happened to Vitalite?! Can pregnancy hormones cause your brain to travel back a few decades?!

MainlyMaynie · 09/01/2011 10:50

My only real craving has been for whisky Shock. I've ignored it obviously, but spent considerable amount of time over Christmas sniffing other people's drinks!

saffy85 · 09/01/2011 13:22

I was craving pickled onion monster munch mixed in with heinze tinned spagetti and sausages a few weeks ago. [vom emotion] tasted bloody good at the time but don't think I could ever look at either now without feeling ill.

Also craved those manky hotdogs you get at the cinema one night too. None of my cravings are ever healthy. Boxing Day I saw the pate my aunt set out for her buffet and had to sit on my hands to stop myself eating any.

RockLover · 09/01/2011 13:42

I have craved complete crap, especially chocolate Hobnobs (which at 37 weeks I am still craving massively). And full sugar pepsi/coke, I couldn't get enough.

Weirdly I have a thing about my DP's mouthwash, it smells just like the pink stuff at the dentist that you swill your mouth with. I don't want to taste it, but I like sniffing it.

And when I stayed at my parents over NY my dad has this cheapy toothpaste and it tasted LOVELY, I couldn't wait to clean my teeth. I really need to get some!
