So what happens to bump if you do have flu?!

Have been stuck in bed now for a week. Getting much better now, but this is the first day I'm even really MNing on my phone! Have been so unbelievably ill and am now fairly worried for bump.

I'm almost 17 weeks gone and have lost over half a stone in only a few days. I'm stuck at my in-laws, so can't even call my own doctor or midwife for reassurance. I have truly never felt this rubbish! Have been feverish and hallucinating and sleeping all day every day til now. You know the way flu is... I just don't see how DC2 can have got through unscathed.

Someone reassure me!

Your baby will be fine!

I has swine flu when I was pregnant with DD2, she is now 15 months and absolutly fine.

Your body is amazing and does everything it can to protect a growing baby. You've been feeling like crap but your little baby will have been oblivious, all snuggled up and doing the occasional somersault!

can you go to a doctor or hospital? if you're really that ill you should go get checked out or it can develop into something worse. I had the flu last month, also at 17 weeks, and developed a chest infection that needed antibiotics.

the doctors assured me that it wouldn't hurt the baby and that the risk is only to you, but it can easily develop into something scarier, like pneumonia.

One of the biggest worries, they told me, is dehydration. That's not good for the baby so if you're not drinking enough make sure you get to the hospital so they can put you on a drip.

Feel better!

but no, as crap as you feel... it won't hurt the baby!

As other posters have said. Why does being at your inlaws stop you phoning your midwife or doctor?

Thanks so much for replies. Should be well enough to travel home over the weekend. We are staying in london, by the way, and my midwife and doctors are in Derbyshire. It doesn't stop me calling them, but it stops them getting to me! Grin

I have MW appt on monday, so will try and get to that, but am just being silly imagining the worst!

I had the dreaded norovirus over Christmas (28weeks) - horrendous D&V. Fortunately we were staying with my parents so my mum was able to look after me - DH would have struggled on his own. It's so horrible to be that poorly at the best of times but really quite scary when you've another person inside you to think of first, so you really have my sympathy. I'd really recommend calling NHS Direct who were great when I called them. They even offered to call a local GP for me.

The main worry for you is the risk of dehydration. You need to drink plenty of fluids not just water though. Try dioralyte salts - fine during pregnancy - or even warm water with honey. The dr told me that you need sugar or salts in the fluid for it to be absorbed.

Hope you feel better soon.

I had flu from 21 December and have been in bed all this time. Turned into pneumonia. I am 12 weeks pregnant. GP says that all the while, my body is making antibodies which is crossing over via the placenta so if anything, the baby is better protected. I haven't had a scan yet so would like to see for myself so can see why you are worried. Ditto posts on dehydration - I have been drinking and drinking because I sure haven't felt like eating and I've lost half a stone too. I find hot squashes are good. Soups are good too if you are finding it difficult to eat. I, like you, have never felt this rubbish before. It's very worrying when you hear what is on in the news but it seems like you are turning the corner now and on the mend. Good luck for Monday :)
