Next baby clothes sizing?

I am wanting to place an order for some baby clothes from Next for my arrival in may.
Im just abit confused with the sizing.
Usually shops go from newborn to 1-3 months and onwards, but next go from newborn to up to 1 month, up to 3 months.
What is the best size to get for a newborn that will not be overly big on the baby but will last abit longer then a month?
I know newborn will fit perfect at birth but would it be better to buy up to 1 month instead or will it come up ridiculously big?
P.s Im not prone to having big babies as my last 2 were 3.2 lbs (29.5 weeks) and 5.6 lbs (37 weeks).

If you tend towards small babies I'd go with newborn as I find they are quite generous in size. You won't need that much though at first so buy a few essentials and then wait? (In fact seeing how small they've been do they not do smaller?)
Do you have any idea of the likely size of this one? (not that they're always accurate mind)

I took my 5lb 11oz baby home in a Next 0-3 months and I cried because I had to turn up the sleeves and trousers and he looked like a gangsta rapper with his top down to his knees! Grin Mind you, who plans for a tiddler?

My last was 8.5lb and she was in the newborn size for 2 weeks, Next sizes are pretty generous so if you have small babies newborn should do for a while and up to 3 months will last ages.

Thanks for your replies.
So what age do you think 0-3 months is most suited to if nexts clothes come up big?

So should i go for newborn or for up to 1 month?
Is there a big difference between the 2?
A lot of you have recommended not to go for up to 3 months, but i just wondered if i should go for up to 1 month or just stick to newborn?

Well my boy wore that outfit for at least 8 weeks when he came out of hospital so it got a lot of wear out of it. :) I'd get one in newborn at least as you have a history of early small babies. Congratulations btw!

DD was quite a small baby. She was in newborn size clothes for about 3 months (they swamped her at first). I had 2 Next "up to 1 month" babygrows for her, and they lasted even longer - about 4 months (which was good because I liked them) but were obviously a bit baggy at first. I would say whatever you get is going to be a bit baggy at first while the baby is all scrunched up. And any clothes are going to either be far too big at first or outgrown quickly. My preference is for too big at first, but longer lasting, so I would go for up to 1 month.

alpinepony- you say your son wore 0-3 months, but next's sizing goes up to 1 month, then up to 3 months and upwards.
Do you remember the exact sizing you got.

Well in that case I'm guessing it was "up to three months" which I always assumed was 0-3 months.

In general though I'd say that Next sizes are true to size - at least for my boy - the week he turned 6 months I had to pack away all the 3-6 month stuff.

DS was 7lbs 12 and wore "up to one month" until he was 6 weeks. The "up to 3 months" vests and sleepsuits are getting tight now (12.5 weeks), but that's because he wears cloth nappies. The shirts will do him a while longer I think.

I regretted slightly not having any "newborn" size, but to be honest I think "up to 1 month" is probably fine (much better than just going with "up to 3"). I would maybe next time get one pack of "newborn" vests and a few sleepsuits, so that if I was showing him off he wouldn't look so swamped.

People are likely to give you stuff in those 3 sizes, so I would just get some essentials to start with.

the up to 3 months size will be massive especially if you dont have big babies, on average sized or small newborns they will be drowned in it. it fits them well when they are more like 2 or 3 months old, i would say next and mothercare are very generous on the sizing.

buy a couple of newborn things just so you have something to fit him nicely when he is very small, then a few of the up to 1 month to do him till he grows a bit
