OMG I'm pregnant and worried I've been boozing over Xmas

My period was very light this month so I did a PG test on NY day just in case. My last period was 2nd December. To my shock, test was positive (contraception failure!)

I'm so worried because I've had quite a few boozy nights out over Xmas. I also ate pate, brie, stilton and rare beef on Xmas day - so just about every bad food there is.

I'm so worried I may have damaged the baby in some way Sad

Is this really bad?

It's almost certainly fine. Prolonged heavy boozing throughout wouldn't be a good idea though.

I'm not sure about the brie/pate stuff, but isn't it in case of food poisoning? Presumably you haven't had that?

DarrellRivers · 05/01/2011 22:10

No, all will be fine
It's very early days
In some ways, no circulation set up with your body yet, just dividing cells.
Congratulations Grin

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 05/01/2011 22:10

Oh, and congratulations. :)

SlightlyTubbyHali · 05/01/2011 22:11

It'll be fine. I guess a LOT of people are here today thanks to party season. And food is really pretty safe - those guidelines are quite belt and braces because people are sooooo risk averse (says she whose babies were made of 9 months of parma ham).

Exciting - I wonder how pregnant you are? Congratulations Smile

Ragwort · 05/01/2011 22:12

I am sure you will be OK - I didn't know I was pregnant until I was at least 10 weeks - had been boozing (a lot Grin) and eating all the wrong sorts of things - no problems.

MistleToad · 05/01/2011 22:21

Oh you are all so brilliant, thank you for your reassurance! I did not have any food poisoning type symptoms over Xmas thank goodness.

LOL at the parma ham baby Grin

Ugh I'm feeling so nauseous that even the thought of a drop of alcohol makes me want to be sick and I am now completely paranoid about all food aswell!

Not sure how PG I am, first day of last period was 2nd Dec so perhaps 5 weeks -ish?

Aww, many, many children are conceived under the influence (my first certainly!) Our bodies are very good at protecting the pregnancies. Chances are if the cheeses and pates were supermarket bought they'd be pasturised and free from listeria etc anyway.

So congratulations and don't worry - it's not good for the baby Grin

emoo777 · 06/01/2011 07:18

Exactly the same here - I had SUCH a boozy christmas, and also must have had a contraception failure. Ate so many naughty things too. I am not concerned though as at such an early stage there is no circulatory system so hopefully should be fine.

nikki1978 · 06/01/2011 07:51

Wouldn't worry it happens to loads of people. My first child was conceived late Dec and I spent lots of xmas and new year drunk. If fact I drank a very large amount of vodka on NYE! The placenta has not formed that early so you can't harm your baby anyway :)

Obviously I wouldn't drink from now on.... ;)

nikki1978 · 06/01/2011 07:51

Oh and congrats!

MistleToad · 06/01/2011 08:31

Thank you for your boozy cheese and pate eating stories!

I think you are right, lots of babies must have been subjected to "the wrong things" in the early weeks of pregnancy, especially September babies who were concieved in December!

And congratulations to you emoo Smile

Hi girls x
I went to Mexico all inclusive over Xmas didn't know I was pregnant. I drank quite a bit bt cz I was so tired I mainly had a few during day and nt much at night. I was really worried that I'd hurt the baby when I found out bt it doesn't. Share our blood yt so I'm hoping everythings ok.
I had a scan the other day and everything was fine I'm six weeks 5 days now. Due on 27th aug
Congratulations everyone xx

SparkleSoiree · 07/01/2011 00:54

Congratulations! A September stork on its way for you!

Nell799 · 07/01/2011 23:30

I got married and went on an all inclusive honeymoon a few weeks before Christmas . I drank loads . In fact on the last night I was extremely sick . To top if off , I took strong pain killers to beat the hangover . Got back to the freezing UK and came down with a cold and took flu remedies , only to find out I was pregnant . Don't know how far along since my cycles are four to six weeks long , but booked a private scan for next Saturday . I was also worried about any harm I had done ! LMP was mid November !

MistleToad · 08/01/2011 13:22

Congratulations to you Nell!

I hope all goes well with your scan

The problem foods (pate, brie etc) are all contra-indicated because they can very occasionally carry bacteria that can cause miscarriage (listeria etc).

If you haven't had an upset stomach or a miscarriage, then you can safely assume the danger is past! Incidentally, the French eat all these things during pregnancy as they are not told not to.

As for the alcohol - well, you can't turn back the clock, so try not to worry. For two of my pregnancies it was a (what I thought) persistent hangover/nausea that first alerted me to the fact that I was pg! I think alcohol is definitely a concern in later pg, but I don't doubt you'll be fine.

Congratulations, and good luck for the next 9 months!

frostinathesnowgirl · 08/01/2011 13:53

I'm also one of the 'drinking over Christmas' club members. Just took test and it was to my shock very positive!! Felt so sick last week I lost weight and am slimmer than before Christmas! A first!

Good luck!

ilythia · 08/01/2011 14:20

I didn't get pregnant over christmas but was 3-4 weeks when I got married a few years ago, we went to Amsterdam on our honeymoon. I can barely rememebr the next few daysGrin. Realised I was pregnant on the way home when I checked diary dates.
DD1 is fine!

lillybloom · 08/01/2011 14:42

I got a negative test just before a girls weekend. Spent the weekend boozing, eating everything I shouldn't and dancing on tables. Had an amazing time. The hangover was awful. I was complaining about feeling yucky at work and boss suggested I re do the test as he was sure I was pregnant. He was right the first test must have been wrong!Ds was the healthiest out of all my dc.Smile

MummyTooBee2011 · 10/01/2011 15:01

o my gosh

i am exactly the same :) contraceptive failure

i am about 7 weeks now,

and i didnt find out until last week (I was on the pill so had no reason to do a test)

and i drunk an obseen amount of alchahol on xmas eve and NYE - the only reason i did a test is because what i though was the worst hangover of my life on xmas day turned out to be the peanut not agreeing with the aclhahol lol

plus i am was a heavy smoker so that was another thing that i worried about,

I completely stopped smoking and drinking when i found out and luckily for me the only food im not aloud that im missing is my St. Agur :(

excited now just a long wait till 12 weeks i think :(

TrillianAstra · 10/01/2011 15:02

Up until the point where your period was due the embryo hasn't implanted, there's no link between you and it, so it's not getting anything from you and boozing won't have affected it in the slightest.

MummyTooBee2011 · 10/01/2011 15:03

by the way, very sorry for my very poor punctuality in that post! Blush
