IJust Want A Bath!!! What Do You Miss During Pregnancy?

My back is achey and I haven't been sleeping properly for ages. I would really, really, really, really love a soak in a nice warm bath, but I am not allowed because of my waters breaking early in my last pregnancy (14+5) and infection risks. Sad It is so tempting to just have one, chances are things would be fine, but it's obviously just not worth the risk, if something happened after I'd never forgive myself. I am 13+4 today, so only 25 weeks or so to go... (hopefully!)

What do you miss whilst pregnant?

I eat runny eggs. I figure the chances of catching salmonella are very slim. I've never known anyone get salmonella from eggs.

Pate is a big no-no. I have an acquaintance who works at a path lab examining samples and she will never eat pate because of the risk of listeria. Personally though, I can't wait to have hot buttered toast and pate Grin

To whoever asked about the brie, I think the issue is not just whether it's pasteurised, but the fact that it's mould ripened. Any of those soft cheeses with rinds are probably off the menu. Again, I have brie and stilton waiting for me after baby is born.

As for what I miss.....I miss being able to do what I want, when I want without having to plan whether a trip out is too much effort or whether there's too many steps or of my destination is too far to walk to.

ZephirineDrouhin · 05/01/2011 22:04

ledkr and others, I have good news from a 1965 book on natural childbirth which I have just been reading called "What Every Woman Should Know About Childbirth": apparently although spirits and cigarettes should only be taken "in moderation" during pregnancy and breastfeeding, beer and wine are absolutely fine Grin.

I miss proper sleep the most.

niamh29 · 05/01/2011 22:08

I miss runny eggs so much and tea (I go off it every time I'm pregnant, it just tastes wrong) 11 weeks to go.....

Trinaluce · 05/01/2011 22:09

I agree on the rare steak! Also, when DD (that's DD said through gritted teeth) WILL NOT go to bed, I miss a very large glass of wine. Followed by another....

LDNlady · 05/01/2011 22:27

Hot hot hot baths
All the soft cheeses that exist
Runny eggs
A nice bottle of red wine and Belgian beers
Cold deli meats

I'm seriously writing all this and more in a shopping list for hubby to have ready for me after baba is here!! :)

cocoachannel · 05/01/2011 23:39

Oysters and Champagne, followed by a blue steak and glass of red wine. Then stilton and port after something sweet. Mmm...

ursulabear · 06/01/2011 01:18

definately sleep on my tummy is the big one. moving without groaning or needing pulled up! i've basically eaten everything i'm not supposed to apart from pate, so i'm missing pate at this point on yummy warm crusty bread!
also i miss being able to be active during sex...at this point (37wks) my DP is doin all the work...i just lay on my back and enjoy..so not all bad (smile). and strangely i miss exercise and the feeling of being half fit! completing housework in one run and not needing to sit every 20mins for a break!

i bet i'll still miss my bump though!

otchayaniye · 06/01/2011 07:07

Wow, I had no idea you couldn't do these things. I had my first child in Asia and they don't issue these guidelines.

I did know about rinded cheese and pate and listeria.

Why no coffee (I thought you can have a few cups), why is a warm bath bad. Why no chocolate? And wine. You can have 3 units a week, right

otchayaniye · 06/01/2011 07:08

what's wrong with deli meats?

JitterBug2 · 06/01/2011 07:13

Sushi and really stinky cheese. Not really been missing alcohol but all the Christmas parties were tough - drunk people are really not that much fun when you're stone-cold sober!

otchayaniye · 06/01/2011 07:57

But sushi is fine. All fish used in chain sushi places here has been previously frozen to a high enough temp to kill bugs.

I had top-notch sushi with colleagues in Tokyo (unfrozen) when pregnant and they said their wives all had it.

izzybiz · 06/01/2011 08:01

Eggs stamped with the Lion mark are fine, the hens have been vaccinated against Salmonella.

superchick · 06/01/2011 08:12

I eat runny eggs as long as they are lion stamped and within date. I also eat medium rare steak. I don't miss getting pissed or smoking but I do miss being able to drink alcohol whenever I fancy it. I miss nice cheese, salami, parma ham. I hate feeling tired all the time and miss being able to do stuff other than the absolute necessary without bursting into tears through tiredness. I miss feeling normal.

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 06/01/2011 08:20

Hot hot baths.

A really good workout.

Still sleep sort of on my tummy though (at 25 weeks).

MaybeTomorrow · 06/01/2011 08:25

I'm not PG so was just being nosy really. But when I WAS PG with my DD, I was told that I could have runny eggs as long as the chickens had been vaccinated for salmonella. All chickens in the UK that are used for eggs to be sold, have to be.

I was a bit unsure as we have Farm Fresh Eggs delivered fortnightly by 'Mike the Eggman' Grin, so I phoned his farm and asked the question and he confirmed that all the chickens used in the UK HAVE to be vaccinated now, it's the law.

Unfortunately I didn't find out until 34 weeks - damn and blast it! Hmm

Similarly prawns that you buy in supermarkets, in little pots are fine as they are cooked (if they're pink, they're cooked!). Same with smoked salmon as the smoking cooks it.

HTH ladies - have some runny eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast tomorrow.

HOWEVER, I would still avoid all the above before 14 weeks. But that's just me...

nomoreheels · 06/01/2011 08:32

I've been eating medium rare steak occasionally, and have taken warm (not hot) baths once in a while too. I do poach my eggs for 5 mins instead of 4 so the yolks are soft but just set (can't stand hard yolks) and have been fine. I've also been eating some deli meats, but not very often.

I don't normally eat pate or oysters so that's fine.

I did miss Brie and blue cheeses at Christmas though. I ate lots of lovely cheddar, Wensleydale etc but it just wasn't the same. And I also missed drinking port or sherry while making Christmas lunch. I wanted to save my 1-2 units as a treat for xmas telly sofa lounging later though!

CardyMow · 06/01/2011 09:30

Pate. I miss pate so much that I stand in the aisle of the supermarket in front of it and DROOL. DP knows that as soon as this baby is out (am 38+4) he is to buy me a crusty baguette and some Ardennes pate, and not come near me until he has. Grin.

CardyMow · 06/01/2011 09:34

Salami? WTF? That must be a new one? Never got told that? . OK most of my do's and don'ts were 'remembered' from my previous pregnancies (DD 12yo, DS1 8yo, DS2 7yo), but seriously, what's wrong with salami? Am now going to fret about that as I didn't know about it and have been eating it lots for the past month

What's the problem with eating salami when pg? It's not from a deli ounter, it's either in a pre-made sandwich or from a packet on the supermarket shelf?

Deliaskis · 06/01/2011 09:37

I started off worrying about all the contraband food stuff, but have since done a bit more research and eat runny eggs if lion-stamped, a rare-ish steak now and then if it's from our butcher, prawns now and then, and smoked salmon (although this is not on the banned list).

Things I REALLY miss are:

  • Sleeping on my front
  • Proper rolling around in bed/on the sofa cuddles (I'm not really referring to sex, just proper launch your self into a cuddle thing rather than 'just a minute, OK, you can put your arm there, but not there, and I can't move so that will have to do'), also proper standing up bear hug cuddles without bump being in the way. I married a very cuddly man and he is being tragically under-cuddled at the moment!
  • Having/wearing nice clothes/shoes if we go out. I have a few maternity bits but none of them are really going out type things, and with flat boring shoes the effect is not the same.
  • Being able to plan a night out with the confidence that I will be there past 9.30. I'm not normally a real party animal or anything, but I do get frustrated going for a meal with friends and struggling to stay awake through dessert.
  • A good full night of sleep, which people tell me I will never have again.
  • Being able to put trousers on standing on one foot at a time instead of having to perch on the bed like humpty dumpty (OK this isn't a really serious one but it's still annoying!).
  • Just yer know...energy and joie de vivre...

That's about it!

Oooh and oh My God January is sh!te without the anticipation of looking forward to going skiing! DH and I are both huge fans and I can't communicate how depressing it is that we can't go this year.

D

JBrd · 06/01/2011 09:46

Sleeping on my front, oh yes, how I miss that!

Also being able to turn over in bed without it being a major operation and taking forever due to the millions of pillows that I now have around me.

Eggs Benedict, would love love love some. With smoked salmon, preferably. Did try them with non-runny eggs, but it's just not the same.

Not getting incredibly itchy every evening anymore, up to the point where I have to change clothes.

I'm only 22 weeks, sigh...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/01/2011 09:56

Delia - I just PMSL at your Humpty Dumpty description - that is what I do too!
Also the skiing. This is DC2, so we have missed a couple of years already while I was pg with DS and when he was tiny. We went last year and took my parents to help with childcare - it worked pretty well but we are looking forward to the kids being old enough to do Club Med or something and be able to ski for a whole day unencumbered!

Jbrd - you can eat smoked salmon. The smoking kills any nasties so tuck in!

Also rare steak is fine now too, there is no longer a risk from well-reared beef. Had a lovely rare sirloin the other night, yum.

I miss sleeping on my tummy and being able to roll over in bed without it being a mammoth operation involving moving several pillows and grunting. When I accidentally roll over in my sleep I wake up because my SPD hurts so much :(
And I miss proper cuddles with DH, and he can't even get at me in bed due to all the pillows!

11 weeks left....

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/01/2011 09:57

Yes eggs which are lion stamped (so all UK eggs) are fine to have runny.

Deliaskis · 06/01/2011 10:00

Annnnnnndddd...going to bed, spending a whole night in bed, and waking up with my DH, instead of my current night-time wanderings seeing if I can catch an hour or two of sleep on the sofa/in an armchair etc.

I've been pretty lax on the 'banned' food front. Only really avoided oysters, raw fish and drinking booze - though I've had a couple of glasses of wine a week throughout. I've had rare steak, runny eggs, stilton, cold deli meats, the list goes on. I got rather bored with remembering what I wasn't supposed to eat!

I really miss going out with the girls and not worrying about having 'one more' glass of wine.

I miss running. I get quite jealous when I see people out running at the weekend. Which is amusing as I bet I bloody hate it when I start again!

I miss my waist.

I miss having neat boobs that don't hang down in a slightly worryingly permant looking way - covered in veins.

I miss tights that don't work their way towards my knees.

I miss jeans with buttons.

I miss high heels.

I miss underwire.
