Is it ok to ask about the presence of nasal bone/ nuchal fold etc at 12 week scan

... even if it is just a dating scan? Would it be cheeky or is it normal/expected? It's just that you have to pay £200 for a specific scan to look at nuchal fold and we chose not to go for that.

Do you think I could just ask? Scan tomorrow. Excited and nervous!

Do they point things out? Like might they point out the nasal bone?

Is it private? I had an NHS scan, and because I asked for the screening on account of my age, they told me the nuchal measurement (1mm) and although we didn't ask about the nasal bone we could see it quite clearly.

Good luck and don't be nervous! if it's an NHS one like ours was, remember to take 4 quid for a scan photo..

My NHS dating scan report actually states:

^Patient attended for appt with insufficient bladder filling, with this proviso:
Single live fetus
Fetal heartbeat and movements seen^

So this leads me to believe that if the Sonographer could have got a good look at the baby they would have checked for anomolies/nasal bone/nuchal fold etc. I was a bit gutted because my 'insufficient bladder filling' obviously prevented them doing anything more than a dating scan and quick check. Unfortunately my HG made me throw up the pint of water you're meant to have beforehand. So I'd ask away if I were you and get that bladder full. Good luck anyway stottie!

You ned to tell them in advance that you want the nuchal fold measured at your 12week scan - at least I had to, but then I did the blood test as well.

surely a nuchal scan is different to a dating scan - I thought most NHS hospitals offered this now

it takes a while and I assume experience but it is something the radiographer should be able to do so £200 seems rather steep - is this a private scan?

you generally need to ask in advance - some trusts say you have to have recieved "counselling" first (which means being given a leaflet) in case its not good news. They won;t like you asking when you are actually there on the bed, timings of appointments depend on the type of scan.

At my 12 week dating scan two weeks ago, I had the nuchal measurement taken because my hospital does this automatically now. They didn't when I had my dating scan for DS 3 years ago. I'm still under 30 (just!) so it's not my age - am just lucky with my hospital for once!!

I see no harm in asking, but I wouldn't get your hopes up that they'll do it!!!

Private - almost certainly they won't mind, they want your custom! They won't give you odds or anything though unless you've paid for a dedicated nuchal scan.

NHS - depends on the sonographer. Some are wonderful and kind, others just scrape by with the bare minimum and give you a filthy look if you dare ask anything at all, even to merely look at the screen with one I had once. Most fall somewhere in between. Nothing to lose by asking though, so go for it.. you could get lucky!

It's NHS. £200 for the nuchal scan - if you want it they book you in for a private scan.

Last time I asked and the lovely sonographer looked and measured and was very kind. But it was a different hospital (was in London, now Yorkshire) and they didn't offer the alternative of the private scan.

Hmm. I think I will just wait and see who I get!! Think I will definitely ask if nasal bone present - surely that's fairly obvious if it's there - no extra measuring/ work involved!!

They should tell you about the nasal bone.. "should", unless you get a real awful sonographer. Less likely they would measure the NT though unless they were feeling super helpful as it can be a bit of a faff to do and depends a lot on position.
