Have heard of a couple of people recently who were told they were getting one sex at the 20 week scan and ended up with the other. Does anyone know how accurate the scan is for this?

it all depends on what the sonographer can see. i have had plenty of experiences where the baby was not what they were told it was going to be! some units will not even advise as parents kept trying to sue for getting it wrong. if you are to find out i would just accept that it can never be 100% from ultrasound alone.

Agree it depends on the scan. Part of the check is normal development of the genitals (or at least it is on my notes) but nothing is 100% accurate and it all depends on the baby's position. I'd be very reluctant to base big decisions like decorating a nursery in a pink princess theme on an ultrasound.

A boy tends to be a bit more definitive (bits can, if a good angle achieved, be clearly seen). The sonographer tends to confirm if its very clear. For girls, in my experience and from similar discussion, they tend to say I think that its a girl but are less likely to confirm. I've had five scans since 20 weeks (various complications and an over anxious registrar) and no bits have been seen but haven't had a girl confirmed - they always say if they put money on it the odds would be towards a girl.

I had a scan every week and at a longer scan at 11 weeks they told me the sex and said it had 85 pct reliability. At 20 weeks it was 90 pct. It was pretty clear on the scans.

This was Asia though.
