Preping Nipples for Breastfeeding...!?!?!

Any advice would be great....! Did anyone 'prep' their nipples before the nipper arrived....??

I have been advised to start 'preping' my nipples..for breastfeeding!

A friend gave me some nipple cream and told me to start using it from about 32 weeks or so. Another person told me to take a old towel (ie well used and rough) and rub my nipples to toughen them up, after having a shower I'm guessing...!

Is this all good advice or utter rubbish...really keen to give breastfeeding a good go.

Erm... that's all complete tosh. And frankly, life is too short to be "prepping" nipples!

I am sure that I read somewhere recently that there is no need to do anything at all (and think of all the women around the world who don't!). I won't be doing anything... but I do have some Lansinoh cream in the cupboard in case they get sore.

Your nipples are designed for breastfeeding. If prep was needed for BF success then people would have died out long before towels were invented.

Just have some lanolin at the ready for after your baby is born (just in case - you may not need it) and take all the (qualified) advice you need re positioning.

I didn't bother prepping and had heard it was nonsense anyway.
Be prepared that they may be sore for a couple of weeks, as mine were, but just persist, it does get better and quickly becomes totally pain free.

I dropped round to see my friend's new baby (her second) just before my second was born, and heard her muffled cursing as he latched on, at which point remembered how much it had hurt first time around, got out my old tube of Lansonil in a panic and started massaging it into my nipples twice a day for the next few weeks. Did it help? dunno really, certainly didn't do any harm.

Get some Lansinoh, some DVD box sets and the NCT/La Leche League help line number - all probably more use than prepping.
