Been to the docs today for the 3rd time it is 9 weeks since my last period i never miss and they are never late all my 6 pg tests have come back neg and the GP is asking for a scan to be done but i might have to wait up to 3 weeks because iam not showing has pg she did mention a possible missed miscarriage. What are the chances i am pregnant have any of you ladies been through anything similar. I am very worried and dont know what to think.

Hi.A common cause of irregular periods is a hormone imbalance. And also stress.
Have you been trying to conceive?
I would have thought they would do blood tests to rule out pregnancy and to check your hormones.
I had a missed m/c.I had positive tests and had a scan at 9 weeks but the embryo hadn't survived beyond 5 weeks. They did a blood test to confirm too.

I don't know why the GP has suggested you wait for 3 weeks when a blood test can be done immediately....plus a scan at the local EPU.

Maybe you should seek a 2nd opinion?

Irregular periods can be caused by hormone imbalance which can arise for different reasons...

I did go through a phase of irregular periods, although they are normally regular - a scan showed I have PCOS.

I only had scan after no periods for 6 months though.

Perhaps insist on a blood test immediately?

Were you TTC?
Are you having any pregnancy symptoms?

cherrypiew3 · 29/12/2010 20:32

no we have not been ttc i did miss some pills though i have to take a sample tomorrow for them to check nothing has been said a about blood tests. i did have some cramps at the start of all this which felt similar to early pg cramps and a funny discharge but nothing since

If you were taking the pill would not be uncommon to have hormonal imbalance & irregular periods afterwards. But equally if you missed some pills you could be pregnant or have had a missed abortion.

Did you not get a withdrawal bleed after the last pill? Or have you stopped taking it for last 9 weeks?

MumNWLondon · 29/12/2010 20:38

pcos is polycystic ovary syndrome. its very common affects 20% of women, and some of these have irregular periods, some also have problems conceiving.

dollylolly · 29/12/2010 20:39

cherrypiew3 pcos = Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common female endocrine disorders affecting approximately 5%-10% of women of reproductive age (12?45 years old) and is thought to be one of the leading causes of female subfertility.[1][2][3][4]

The principal features are obesity, anovulation (resulting in irregular menstruation) or amenorrhea, acne, and excessive amounts or effects of androgenic (masculinizing) hormones. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary greatly among women. While the causes are unknown, insulin resistance, diabetes, and obesity are all strongly correlated with PCOS.

I agree strange no bleeding after last pill, should have had withdrawal bleed. presumably you haven't taken any pills since?

insist on scan sooner? i think this is more uncommon (ie no bleed after last pill) than missing a period if you weren't on pill.

roo1983 · 29/12/2010 21:01

When I was on the pill I would sometimes not get a period if I had missed a pill from that month's pack; even if I took it as soon as I remembered.

wannaBe · 29/12/2010 21:05

blood test may not have been offered if local hospital do not test for pregnancy - ours don't.

I missed a period like this about five years ago (we were ttc though and not on the pill) and the gp said I was almost certainly pg despite negative tests. After three weeks of neg tests gp did blood test but it was sent back by the hospital saying they do not test for pregnancy and normal pg tests should be sufficient.

My period returned a month later - no pregnancy (I never did fall pregnant again).

There are lots of things that can delay periods, stress/hormone imbalances/thyroid problems. Tbh if you are testing negative then it's unlikely you are pregnant, but I would ask gp to do blood test for under/overactive thyroid as well.

Also you should still be taking precautions as even if you're not having periods you can still be ovulating.

cherrypiew3 · 29/12/2010 21:10

roo i have thought of this but now i have missed 2 periods so dont know have not taken any pills since i missed my first.

Yep precautions are well in place dh stays far away from meSmile

wannabe hope you wont mind me asking but what were the reasons you never fell pg again.

Have thought about the thyroid and will be asking the gp about this next time
