i've had a pretty difficult pregnancy throughout from the point of view of sickness/reflux/heartburn etc and not put on much weight. i now have flu and have lost several pounds this week. the result is i'm only a stone heavier than pre pregnancy, and i'm due to give birth in two weeks. (9st 10lb this morning Shock )
With my first baby i put on almost three stone by the end, and was 11st 5lb by the time i gave birth. my son was almost 9lb.
i'm worried this baby is going to be very small, esp if i don't get better soon. i can't keep anything down; been vomiting for 48hrs. doctors say baby will 'take what it needs' from me. any similar experiences/words of encouragement?

I was nearly two stone LIGHTER at the end of my pregnancy with dd2 due to hyperemesis, dd2 was 7lb 5oz and completely healthy. I survived on a diet of bacon butties and sugary sweets as that was all that would stay down.

The baby does indeed take what it needs, they are selfish beasts Wink

I'm sure your baby will be fine, look after yourself and I hope you're feeling better in time for the birth.

Try a vitamin supplement if you can stomach it, that might help you replace what the baby has used.

I lost 5kg (sorry I don't know pounds and stones!) in my first trimester. Over all I've gained 1.5 stone (10kg) and due in a week. I know I haven't gained any fat weight but I do have water retention and my bump is big! My drs haven't blinked at all and wouldn't have worried even if I were smaller.

Also a friend of mine lost so much weight in the beginning that she only ended up 3kg heavier than her pre pregnancy weight. Her child was fine.

Seriously, the drs would have brought you in to hospital if they felt the baby wasn't developing.

purepurple · 29/12/2010 09:07

I am sure the baby will be fine. I hardly put on any weight at all with both my pregnancies. I had terrible hyperemesis and lost weight at one point.
But when DS was born he was 8lb 60z. I think I put on just over a stone, I was back to my normal weight almost immediately. The midwives in the hospital kept saying, 'you don't look like you have just had a baby.' DS was perfecdtly fine and is now a strapping 6 foot plus with size 11 feet, so it didn't seem to do him any harm.
With DD, I had hyperemesis again and put on slightly more, but was still back to normalish weight after delivery. She was only 7lb 13oz, so slightly smaller than DS, but perfectly healthy. She is now 14 and is taller than me and a size 6/8.
Hope you feel better soon. Don't worry, the doctors are right.

thanks, this is really encouraging. it's hard to believe it will all be okay at this very low point but hopefully it will

So tough - I was nearly 3 stone lighter with DD1 and 2 stone lighter with DD 2 they were 7lb10 and 8lb1 DD1 was 5 days late and DD2 was a few days early. Your body will feed baby first the burn reserves to feed you. It will be fine.

I actually lost weight (I needed to) and ds was 10lb 6!

NineNieciesDancing · 29/12/2010 09:33

I put on 1st 2lbs (16lbs) with DS1 and he was 6lb 10oz and born on time.

I put on 1st 4lbs (18lbs) with DS2 and he was 9lbs and 6 days early.

I didn't have particularly bad pregnancies, just didn't put on weight.

I have 3 friends all of whom had chronic MS, put very little weight on and all had at least 8 lbers.

I think your weight has very little to do with the babies' weight. That might be why I was weighed once in 2 pregnancies - it just doesn't matter that much to the outcome.

Good luck with your baby - hope you feel better soon.Smile

I lost weight when pregnant with dd3, she weighed 8lb 11oz.

itsawonderfuldarleneconnorlife · 29/12/2010 09:56

After birth I was only 3lbs heavier than before I got pregnant with DS. He was 8lbs6oz.

I've gained less than recommended and scans show baby is on the large side for dates. Just over halfway through though so I may balloon in the last trimester!

Eat what you can and if you're worried take a supplement. I started doing that when I noticed I hadn't gained any weight at all and wasn't feeling hungry - it's not a substitute for eating (obviously) but it means at least baby is getting the vitamins etc.

JuneBugJr · 29/12/2010 17:15

The day I had DD, I was about 6lb lighter than pre pregnancy weight. Due to hyperemesis and being very fussy about food all the way through.

DD was 8lb 7oz if memory is correct!, and was early because of a mess up with my dates (induced). She has no problems despite the lack of food, and meds I was taking thank god.

Currently 20 weeks pregnant, and have lost about 16lb, but put 4lb of that back on in last few weeks, so will probably not put on any weight with this one either. Baby is measuring big for dates!

Dont worry, they will suck the good stuff from you, and manage to put on weight in dire circumstances. If you are concerned, see what your midwife thinks Smile

I gained 12 pounds and baby was 7lb 15!

Sparkles23 · 29/12/2010 17:29

I put on less than 2 stone in my pregnancy (and I wasn't overweight to begin with - 9stone 10 and 5ft 7'), I didn't start showing until 6/7 months and was so worried that I would have a teeny baby but he arrived on due date at 9lb 3oz so weight gained is no way an indicator the baby takes what they need.

Scorps · 29/12/2010 17:30

I've had 4 babies, and i don't put on 2 stone in nay of my pregnancies. Last baby i was less than ten stone just before i had her. Mine weighed 6lb 11, 8lb 1, 8lb 9 and 7lb 13. It's entirely possible.

Sparkles23 · 29/12/2010 17:32

oh and it was all baby as all came off with the birth, they curl themselves up small in there!

wigglesrock · 29/12/2010 17:52

I am 33 weeks pregnant and haven't put on an ounce!! Have been sick the whole time, so pleased to finally finished work!! Am also running around after 5 and 3 year old and their very busy social lives Grin

I put on no weight with dd1, she was 6lbs 10, put on a little weight with dd2 - she was 8lb 8oz and this wee one looks and feels fine according to midwives etc. It's just me that's a wreck!!

AliGrylls · 29/12/2010 19:44

At week 30 of last pregnancy I had only gained 2kg - exactly the same reasons as you. I have never been so ill in my life and ended up staying in hospital because I had a fever that would not come down. By the end of pregnancy I was 6kgs heavier than pre-preg and that was with loads of effort. DS was 2.85kgs and was really healthy. Since birth he has really piled on weight. I found vitamin supplements made me feel worse. I just ate for England when I was well.

Hope it all goes well.
