Despite obsessive handwashing and avoidance of people with colds I have developed a snuffle and a cough. Nothing terrible but the cough is very dry and constant, so I can't get any peace. Have taken ribena with honey in it, which helped for 2 minutes. Is there aything else I can try, it is driving me crazy!

hot port - mix some port with a bit of honey or sugar top up glass with boiling water and a slice of lemon studded with a few cloves - sip when very hot or same mix but with whiskey. Much more effective than Ribena - one or two of these a day have been getting me through Xmas with a foul cold without quite collapsing

sorry just saw this was in pregnancy section and so of course you wouldn't want to drink alcohol. What about a slice of root ginger and lemon with hot water - used to drink this when had colds at work.

I was told by a midwife I could have childrens cough medicines.

Boots own brand cough syrup says you can take whilst pregnant, its only about £2 a bottle as well (purple one)

Hi there, try Manuka Honey, highest concentration you can get with lemon, it worked for me. Get to your bed early with some lavender oil in a vaporiser beside the bed too and get one of those olbas oil inhalers. It all helps. Hope you feel better soon.

I've been ill with one bug or another since mid-november. The joys of ds starting preschool! I've just noticed that keeping the air more humid in the house makes a massive difference to how much we're coughing. It's really a revelation, and so helpful now while I'm pregnant and can't take the usual cough/cold remedies. So I've been putting wet towels on the radiators when we haven't had other wet laundry to dry. Helps loads with congestion too!

Lots of great ideas, thanks!

Hi I have had the cold from Hell for last 3 weeks - and aside from taking Paracetamol, the doc suggested drinking warm drinks and sticking your head over a bowl of steam - and chucking a towel over your head and breathing for 5 mins.

Seems to work and kind of loosen the horribly feeling on your chest and if you get the minging mucas - helps with that.

I've been the boots today and checked with midwife.. Boots own brand glycerin & blackcurrent linctus is safe to use during pregnancy. The label says it so I checked and it's got the all clear. It's for dry coughs but it works well with mist by helping to stop you coughing.
