Hi all. Hope you had lovely Christmases

I'm feeling wretched with a bad cold while breastfeeding and in v early stages of new pregnancy (and spotting - scary!). I have these strong vitamin pills from Foresight Pre-Conception Care I got when trying to conceive DD (who is also poorly)

It says on the packet to take 1 to 6 per day. Each capsule contains 500mg vitamin C (833% RDA) and loads of vitamins B1 and B12....

Any ideas?

Thanks for reading. I also wonder if any MNetters have views on the rest/ fresh air debate.

Vit c is water soluble so won't build up in your body. How much garlic are you taking - I wouldn't take it if you are on aspirin as it is a blood thinner.

Why do you need such strong vit pills- you really prob do not need to Tale 5000 times the rda of vir c by taking 6 pills!

Excess vitamin C is usually excreted harmlessly by the body (an expensive urine supplement?)

Taking megadoses (over 500 or 1,000 mg per day, depending on source), is harmless for most people. But it can cause diahorrhea and there is evidence linking it to the formation of kidney stones. There may also be an effect on the increase of absorption of certain minerals (iron, copper).

I just want to knock feeling ill on the head as soon as possible!

The claims (first popularised by Pauling) that vitamin C helps prevent colds has not been supported by susequent research. That it can help shorten the duration of a cold has been supported, but megadoses are not required; the effect is found at 200mg.

Hope you perk up soon!
