Seizure like movements/convulsions in scan? Worried.

I had my nuchal scan today and the baby was VERY active, kept rolling around and just wouldn't keep still. Great- active baby. But we were in there for about 15-20 minutes and the baby kept making almost seizure like movements, arching it's back in what looked almost like involuntary convulsions.

The sonographer said they were definitely not hiccups, and they most certainly did not look like hiccups. The movements just looked very disturbing. The sonographer said that she had seen something like this before and not to worry. We are worried.

Any one else experienced this? I'm going to UCH next week to hopefully get some answers.

I have and asked the sonographer about it - she said that until 16 weeksish the movements are pretty well involuntary. I was alarmed too but she said they were perfectly normal. Please dont worry, you have an active baby!

Hello, just wanted to reassure you - I had 2 early scans and of course my 12 week scan and my baby was making very similar movements. Our sonographer said that this is the baby practising movement and when they are that young, they dont have many joints and so those are really the only movements that they can make. My baby is making normal movements now (27 weeks). Really hope that other people respond with the same thing too so you can feel reassured x

Thanks so much for your responses... been so worried but feeling reassured now. We were hoping that 'immature' movements might be the reason- but really reassured to hear your experiences were the same.

My baby was doing that in my 12 week scan - sonographer just laughed and said baby was not happy about being disturbed :)

Please don't worry - my baby did exactly the same at the 12 week scan! Wriggling around like mad, almost looked like it was jumping, almost constantly. There's nothing wrong!

Hi there, sounds like exactly the same thing happened at my nucal scan, looked like the little blighter was trying to do back flips! Just kept throwing whole body up in a flip and didn't stop for the entire time! Midwife said it was a good sign, active, healthy baby. I had my 20 week scan at 22 weeks (now 26 weeks) and there was less movement as baby now has less space to float about in, everything was good with the scan and baby is still very active daily. Sounds like you have a wriggly one, that's all!

Yes it did look like the little thing was attempting a back flip... not managing so ended up looking a crazed flapping fish out of water... so this is quite normal?!

Quite normal I would suspect!
