Hi my friend is 23 weeks pregnant and has developed sciatica on her left side(sp?). She has been to see the midwife who was very supportive but offered no rememdies. Does anyone have any advice - I know yoga and pilates can help but dont 'know the moves' iykwim! Thanks.

Oooo I feel her pain! I have just developed it in the last week and in agony - can barely walk!

I've tried everything and nothing has worked but fingers crossed your friend will be more successful.

  • Hot water bottle/ice pack (alternating)
  • Using v pillows to sleep with
  • swimming
  • doing a cat stretch (on all four if you can take it and arching your back, then flattening it) - breathing out and in as you do so.
  • Child's pose -again on your hands and knees, knees wide enough apart for the bump and reaching out with your hands and arms stretching out in front, head down.
  • Lay on your back, knees bent, put one foot over the opposite knee, tuck your hands under the bent knee and pull towards you
  • Good posture at all times.

That's about it really, I hope this helps.

xx

Ouch poor you - pregnancy hard enough on its own! Thats the kind of thing I was thinking of - thanks for the pointers. Hope it eases a bit for you at some point x

an osteopath sorted it for me (1 visit in first preg and 2 visits in second).

I developed this in week 9 when I did a half marathon although it took me until about week 16 to figure out what was wrong with me!! Since I started pregnancy yoga and swimming have been much better.
